Rattling noise underneath disco 4 |
|
Morning guys, i have a disco 4 HSE and have recently had the discs and pads changed on the front. I noticed yesterday that when driving along over bumbs and uneven surfaces on the road, a loud rattling noise is coming from the near side underneath like something is loose, rattling metal against metal!!! I’ve had a look under and around the wheels but nothing looks loose or out of sorts ( not that im a mechanic lol )..... what could this be please?? Thanks in advance.

One of the heat shields, perhaps? They tend to corrode around the washers and get loose. I’ve fixed one with a larger washer, didn’t bother replacing the complete shield. I guess it’s possible for the engine and radiator bottom shielding to loosen, too, but since they weigh a bit more than the thin heat shields I don’t think they’d rattle - more like clunk.
Easiest is to get the vehicle on a two or four post lift and determine by hand what rattles.
While it probably doesn’t make a difference in this case, you might want to update your profile for the correct model, year, etc.

Have a look at the flexible metal basket thing on the downpipe for the exhaust - could be that. Or stones caught behind the backplate on the wheel hubs. Have had both of those. 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +
