Time to change the Pirellis |
|
Hi,
My D4 has just about used its factory fit Pirellis. I do 100% road miles (Defender for the mud), so looking for a great replacement tyre.
On my previous Discos I have always gone to Michelin Latitudes as sold by Costco.
Would appreciate recommendations for other tyres.
BTW the Pirellis have done 25k, a lot of motorway miles, and apart from some tramlining now they're worn, have done everything I needed them to.
Cheers
Simon

I personally like the lat diamaris, i have them on the ff and they look hardly worn after 12k. I have a set of 19" vogue wheels with nearly new wranglers which are ok, though i think one is out of shape as i get a vibration when they are on the ff.
Depends on your budget i suppose. At the better end of the scale i think scorps are always a good bet, and at the moment camskill have the 18" at £122 for the v rated ones, which seems somewhat of a bargain!

I am more concerned about getting a good tyre first, then I'll look for the best price. My D4 has 255/55 19" tyres. The Pirellis have been good, but only lasted 25k. My last set of Michelins lasted well over 50k with the same driving style.
Thanks for the feedback.
cheers

Think you have done well couplands at 25k, my last 2 sets of Scorps managed 20/21k whereas others on the forum have quoted as low as circa 10k! 2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey
All below gone but still with happy memories

2006 D3 S in Zermatt Silver

Dead right Disco_Mikey - my first set of 4 Scorpions lasted c. 9k miles
The replacement GG ATs are still only half worn after 38.5k miles (@ 47.5k) - realistically
I don't expect them to get to 60k miles as, firstly I change tyres prudently early, and secondly I believe (but may be wrong) that the rate of wear seems to be highest in new tyres, because of heat, and when approaching 3 mm tread depth - for what reason I know not.

Not sure if this already up but you should always run in new tyres
"The tyre surface will feature a number of tiny vent holes from the moulding process. It will also be incredibly smooth.
To remove these holes and properly prepare the surface for day-to-day driving, we suggest tyres should be run in for the first 150 to 200 miles at medium speed on dry roads. All while avoiding sharp cornering and hard braking.
Then, a new tyre should be ready to offer you maximum grip and optimum performance."
This also "work hardens" the rubber compound giving the tyre its optimum life.

That's was pretty much what I got out of the Pirellis on 18" OEM SE wheels on the D3,on 2 occassions, but as I posted on another thread they seem to lasting much better on the D4's 20 inchers 8)
I, too went with the Grabbers on the D3, but I would seriously consider the Scorpions when it comes to replacement time next time "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Based on my driving style, the Pirellis that were on my D3 and now my D4 lasted about half what the replacement Michelins did.
Just not sure what to go for now. The GG ATs sound good. Might give them a go.
cheers

OK, so after reading more reviews, the GG GT seems a better fit for my road biased needs.
I've seen them for £133.95 @ http://tyresdirectuk.co.uk/shop/product-in...p;id=31803
Are these good tyres and is this a good price..?
Cheers
