TomTom sat nav where do you put yours
For those of us that didn't want or could not afford the LR SatNav, TomTom is a common solution. But where is the best place to mount it. I dont like window mounts as too obvious and the screen is to far away for easy reading in the D3. I want to mount it in the cubby hole where the LR version normally goes. Has anyone done this. What did you use and does it suffer from bad sat performance there?

Just pop off the centre dash surround from the bottom each side (hard Tug), then run the power cable up to the center space leaving arround 4\5 inches of slack, then pop the surround back on. If you have one of the latest tomtom with a sirfIII chipset then you won't require an additional arial. any of the older Go models though and you will find the signal quite weak. I got around this by cannablising the mount for the external aerial and running the aerial lead up the opposite side of the centre dash surround. Hope this sort of helps 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Simple. Go to your local glass shop and get them to cut you a piece of laminiated glass to fit into the space, Use the TomTom suction mount on this! Works perfectly, you can reach it, use bluetooth and best of all remove it so the thieving toe-rags don't know you've got one. Glass cost £8 inc, bevelling the edges. Little bit of double sided tape holds it flat and secure.
Works for me!

dare I say... I just use the suction mount on the windscreen in the bottom right hand corner... perfect to reach, see and does not get in the way of looking out onto the road.
Take it out completely when I leave the D3 though.

Wouldn't this stick out a fair way from the dash ?
the Tomtom unit sits quite nicely into the OEM satnav space and if you hide the wires almost looks part of the motor. And of course, it can be removed just as quicky 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

One particular tomtom fits quite snugly in the recess where the LR satnav screen goes. there are piccies on someones profile - can't remember who's though!

Woolwich_Gunner, I fitted my Tomtom 710 into that space by using an extra homedock that was supplied to connect the Tomtom to your computer. I cut off the usb cable and your 12v charger plugs into the side of the homedock to charge it whilst it is in the car.
I had to make a small wooden wedge to fit under the homedock to bring the screen of the Tomtom up to the same angle as the air vents on the dashboard. I also fitted a thin piece of plywood under the rubber mat and put a woodscrew through the plywood, through the rubber mat and into the wooden base of the homedock, that way the homedock cannot topple over due to sudden acceleration or braking. The plywood is fixed to the plastic dash with some Bluetack.
I find there is no problem at all with recieving a signal and do not use an external aerial.

Dickgriff - No. The glass sits flat on the rubber mat and the TomTom sits happily on that - in the original space,
No problems receiving the signals either. The beauty of the suction mount is that you can also plug in the mic (for bluetooth hands free) and use audio out if you wish. Sound a bit like the home mount solution without destroying the home mount and with more flexibility!
