Timing kit

Hi all

I’m told it’s wise to get the timing kit done on my 05 d3. As I’ve no clue when it was last done.

I’m no mechanic but I’m technically minded and have done ok so far repairing!

Watched on YouTube and I see it can be done.

What brand should I get? As I see on eBay brands like dayco. None ring a bell to me. Can anyone link me to a good brand please? And some wise advice would be appreciated!!!

Tia

Just look on the advance factors site, their kit contains all you need. You just need to check if you need to replace the oil pump or not.
If its the first belt change then you will need a pump.

Hi thanks for your reply.

I’m not sure if it’s history tbh not seen any specific mention of oil pump

The cars on 184k

What do you think just do it anyway? Or are they costly?

First time doing any mechanical work but I’m finding my feet and will try it if it’s realistic to

Hi,
oil pump should be replaced if it is the old style (weak casting) with the new style one (stronger casting). if you don't do that then there is high possibility of the tensioner to snap (cause it bolts on the pump) and destroy your timing. that off course can lead to catastrophic results.
There are a number of posts in the forum. Also Advance factors has a kit with pump, belts and etc that you will need on that job. (check: https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/camshaft-drive-belt-156-c.asp)

it can be a relative straight forward job if you have some experience and know what you are doing. Alternative you can buy the parts and supply your local mechanic to do it.

Also you might need to consider of changing the belt on your HPFP since these two is good to change together (in terms of millage).

Thanks do you think it can be done in a day?

It’s my only vehicle.

Yeah you can do the front one in a day (not the oil pump)
Maybe not the sort of job a novice wants to rush.

The difficult bit is getting the fan off.
I would practice this (read loosen and get tools) before the day. When you have a spare hour.

Hi all I’m about to buy a timing belt kit

I don’t know what pump casting it’s got. And it involves a lot just to see doesn’t it?

It’s 180k and had the belt changed at least once. I’m wondering what the likelihood is that it’s been changed already?

Is it simply a case of time to remove the aux fan and casing or is it just best to buy a new one regardless?

I did exactly that, to see what mine had before I bought the belt kit. My car had had a new engine when it was 2 years old, so it had the later pump design. It's a couple of easy hours work to take the covers off, and put them back.

When I bought mine, I changed the timing and oil pump regardless, which turned out to be a good idea as it had the old weaker style pump on.

This is the one I had to buy for my Disco as it was an 8A vin: https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/kit701p-...1958-p.asp

Note: you’ll also need to buy the crank bolt as that too is recommended to be replaced: https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/lr002458...4791-p.asp

Again this might change depending on your VIN number.

I was quoted something like £300 for it to be done at a garage. I’ll see what they say about the pump and recommendation vs. This £350 kit plus locking tools etc would be a good £200 more to do myself!

£300? That’s cheap Shocked I was quoted £1200 for both belts and oil pump change. Decided to do it myself.

Edit:

The starter motor is a royal pain in the Censored to get off and on, took me around 45 mins each way.

Also if you do decide to do it yourself it might be worth your while in buying the Flywheel Locking Tool, the manual says that the pins are not sufficient enough to keep the Flywheel locked when undoing the crankshaft bolt: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crankshaft-Flyw...890.l49292

Thanks for the link. Last time I saw them they were £100+

Although everyone uses the locking pins, and you don't have much to loose!

To avoid any problems I would mention that "locking pins" should IMO refer not only to those used to position the camshafts but also that used to lock the flywheel. A set containing both is about £19 on eBay. These red, (perhaps not blue), boxed sets are notorious for the diameter of the flywheel locking device, (manual version at least), being too big and requiring grinding down, (by about 0.1mm). Numerous references on this site. Not a big problem but fore warning, before you find out under the car, will get you back on the road quicker.

Whilst the cambelt can be changed without locking the flywheel, the crankshaft bolt is done up very tightly and it is VITAL that the relative positions of the crankshaft and edit camshafts are not lost. +1 for using a new crankshaft bolt.

AF have a good write up on changing the oil pump on their site and there is another on this site.

Finally, AF are a good place to go, (remember Disco3 discount). Delco on eBay is not always genuine. You have a lot to lose.
