SWMBO has lost confidence in the car. It's had a few faults this year and we can only open the boot now with the key fob. She won't contemplate taking it any significant distance as we are waiting to see what the next fault is, which is a real bind as its load capacity was a key factor inits purchase. But the kids are now adults and have their own cars, and don't want to go anywhere with us anyway.
She sent me a link to a D5 (former commercial). The D5 has grown on me, but if I'm changing, I don't think that we need quite such a big car. Although it's handy when you do need it....
So - I'm contemplating looking at a D5 or a Disco Sport. Anything with either model that I ought to be wary of? I may leave LR entirely, but there's just something about having one.
As for the Disco, We Buy Any Car values it at just over £2k. I'd be willing to let it go to someone else for a good bit less if she will be looked after - it's just not within my skill set to do the necessary maintenace and repairs.
Beware the early 2.0l Ingenium diesel engines in the Disco Sport and D5. They have an issue with oil dilution and timing chains letting go.Other than that they are fantastic cars.
Early D5 still had the TDV6 engine and the middle row of seats are awful. Post 2020 better.

A work colleague has an XC60.He sat in my landmark and was rather upset at paying a grand more for a car that’s not as nice inside.
Isn’t an XC90 just a 2.0 with various power outputs?
I used my dad’s E pace with the D180 engine, did just over 3500 miles in it, it was actually a decent car and the engine was fine. Powerful enough and did mid 40s for my use while trying to sort the D3 fiasco.
I do like the D5 now but imho they are very colour and spec sensitive to being a nice one or a terrible one.
The obvious answer is a 2016 landmark like mine. In loving memory of FA54WSK.
Rest well old friend, your work is done.

Trust me, the XC90 is a great place to be and you'd never know it had a 2.0l engine. The interior quality is leagues ahead of LR and the T8 hybrid is bonkers fast! I still miss mine and it took me three months to let mine go when I got my new Defender. In some ways I still regret it.

Volvo xc60 phev is chinese junk. Had several Volvo's in the past but the quality is Geely crap now. It is only 4WD by virtue of electric motor on one axle and petrol engine on the other. Very small doors and really large sill which make getting in and out difficult and puts dirt on your trousers. Wool seats are a nice eco idea but are difficult to keep clean - leather is far easier. Trying to select 4WD is impossible if you are in a narrow lane and it decides you are going to have the cameras on. Space in the boot is tiny so no good if you have dogs.
Now much happier in a Disco Sport P250 HSE Dynamic - permagrin time again. .

Well that Geely 'crap' was leagues ahead in terms of quality than my Tata Slovakian Defender is and so was the Volvo dealer service.

Who mentioned medical products - we were talking about cars - specifically Geely cars .

You clearly have a problem with English. Or, as usual, are just arguementative. .

Used to hear the same comments about "Jap Crap" in the 70's and 80's.
Didn't help the decimation of the British motorcycle and car industries, because in reality they were the problem.
I think Volvo are in better hands now than when they were owned by Ford. Volvo Cars' head office, product development, marketing and administration functions are mainly located in Gothenburg, Sweden, and their production plants are in various countries in Europe, USA and China.
The reason for the higher sills, smaller doors and smaller glass area in modern cars is for added strength to the shell and Volvo are renowned for their safety in automotive production.
I remember changing tyres or brakes by raising one corner and the other three wheels would stay on the ground.
A few years later if you raised one corner, the shell was so much stiffer that the other wheel on the same side would also lift.
