Ticking sound on start-up

Hi folks, can anyone help.

My D3 (06) has recently developed a ticking sound, which comes from behind the dash somewhere near the radio. The sound, which is a rapid series of very noticeable ticks, lasting for about four seconds, occurs both when a door is opened on getting into the car and immediately on starting the engine.

There are no warnings from the message centre and the car behaves normally after starting. Also, I have tried it out a different vehicle height settings but that makes no difference.

I have contacted my dealer but needs the car to diagnose the problem, which is fair enough.

I have recorded the sound but don't know how to get an mp3 file onto this posting but I can email it to anyone who may have an idea.

Looking forward to your response.

The stereo wakes up when you open the door. The sound is the stereo looking for disc. Mine is more of a swishing than clicking sound though. Surprised

Caver,

Thanks for your response, you are absolutely right, it is the CD mechanism. The reason that I have not heard it before is because I had inserted a CD that I had copied (legally) and the paper label had become unstuck at the edge and was catching on the mechanism as it revolved.

Problem sorted, thank you for your help.

Yeah lables on cd's on car stereo's are a bad idea, they knock the disk off balance and cause the disk to vibrate when spinning. I always leave them lable free and just use a marker pen.

Flack.

I didn't know that! What a useful post.
Presumably this can also apply to the CD reader/writer in your PC, or any other for that matter. Marker pen for me in the future, and those labels are such a faff anyway.
Amazing what you can learn on this forum.
Cheers! Very Happy

Agreed.....you get better results from the forum than you do from the dealership. My problem was sorted within a few hours by a member based in Australia, whereas my dealer didn't have a clue. This saved me travelling some 70 miles to and from the dealer and leaving the car with them for a day.

A big thanks to Martin for the Disco3 website.

Yes the same go's for your pc. I have in fact just lately started using the printable disks and these work perfect, you get a lot better looking disk and you can put what you want on them.
Many inkjet printers now print cd's and the ink is so cheap.
