Three near misses at Wellington Airport, 1959

This had passed me by - until now. The opening of Wellington Airport in NZ, 1959:

- A Sunderland flying boat doing (accidental) touch-and-go's - on the keel, wheels up;
- The crash of a Vulcan
- The Vampire display team nearly wiping themselves out.

Now that is day out.

That was pretty impressive. Crazy to think the Hercules is still in operational use. Thats like a WW1 Sopwith Camel still being in operational use in the 1970's!

What always shocks me is that there is only 11 years difference between the first flight of the Vulcan and the First flight of the Lancaster..

To look at them, you think there was ALOT more than a decade between them..

Imagine if we had had the Vulcan in the height of the war..

Also nice to imagine if we had the F-35 Lightening during the war, I think It would have come to a swift end Razz

When you compare the Lancaster and Vulcan, it's amazing to see that the Lancaster had longer range, but of course the Vulcan was nearly 3 times as fast and flew nearly 3 times as high. A Vulcan would have been all but unstoppable in 1941 - nothing would have been as fast or fly high enough to shoot at it. That's the power of the jet engine for you.

Interesting also to note that the Lancaster could, in special form, carry a heavier bomb load in the form of the 22,000lb Grand Slam. The Vulcan carried 21 1000lb bombs (or a megaton nuke, of course!).

Fascinating, thanks for posting!

I used to live about 40 metres from the northern end of that runway. Saw plenty of 'interesting' landings by commercial flights in the notorious Wellington wind, but nothing like this thankfully!
 King of the typo.

MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!

Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

It only flew in 1944 but the 36,000 ft, 495 mph, 'Natter' might have given it a run for its money.

Vulcan could exceed 50,000ft and max speed was over 600mph so even that mad German device would have struggled.

Slight change of tack to B-17s, but I'm currently reading "A Higher Call", essentially a dual biography: one Bf109 pilot; one B-17 pilot.

Albeit as a cartoon/animation, the story is told well here. If you watch it, think of these photos as you do:

Remember the Vulcans. Big ponderous aircraft. We saw them in action as well as the old Hunter's, which were a bit more nimble.
