I don't know what they replaced before I bought it at 14800 km.
I am now at 45000 km.
My list is:
Rear window replaced
Battery replaced
Internal temperature sensor replaced
Auto gearbox oilleak repaired
Front diff oilleak repaired
The above were things I found after buying.
The following I had when using it;
Handbrake adjusted once.
Rear brake pads replaced front still enough meat left. at 32 k
Rear tailgate issue. Happened to be the wireingloom under the driversseat.(LHD)
Before finding that the doorhandle, actuator and catch were replaced. (so I have spares now)
So I don't have a serious list as you. Roel

The D3 has been treated the same as my previous 4x4s
I thing all of the problems are from build quality.
Im thinking of trading it on a 2008 model. ....im not very bright Pete

Peter, At the rate you're going, you'll have a new 2009 Discovery 3 by stealth by next year. I figure batteries are like brake pads so don't count them as a warranty issue. Other than a bit of a fire caused by dragging EPB and having to pry a wayward Hilux out of the radiator (his fault, not mine), it's been fine. I keep telling people the D3 is capable but sophisticated - more like an Airbus than a Jeep. However, seems an Airbus is beneath the waves in the mid-Alantic, so I may be more prophetic than thought. What's the trend on your faults (ie, is it starting to improve, or same-old, same-old problems). Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

we don't own them for fit and finish |
|
we acquired ours with a little under 30K miles on the clock a year ago ~ we now have 55k on her ~ and it is one of the greatest vehicles ever
we have had it off road and embarrassed our fair share of jeep owners
here is our list
fixed items
lower control arms
sunroof leaks (4 times before i discovered this forum and repaired myself)
some steering bit
suspension errors
transmission jutters
seat coming apart
unrepaired
cruise control has mind of it's own
backlash noise from front diff (dealer refused to repair ~ said it was normal)
right front bag leaks down after sitting for more then 3 hours
rear ac has a leak
windscreen has huge amount of wind noise
sadly i believe the greatest fault of land rover is to try and make things attractive to "yuppies" and "soccer mom's" all the high tech stuff is nice but it is a pain in the a** ~ i would much rather have a steering column that is robust enough to last 20 years then heated seats ~
I live in the US and we don't get very many options here they are all loaded ~ no diesels ~ not many with rear locking diff's ~ no std transmissions ~ i would gladly trade many of the gizmos for better "real" parts
it is a great drive though ~ it is a fun vehicle ~ gives you a sense of pleasure to drive ~ the knowing that when the time comes you will be prepared
a perfect example is the last time it flooded here (happens regularly here in houston tx) i was driving out to help some relatives and ended up helping several stranded motorist through water that was starting to crest the hood when i saw a guy loading up what appeared to be his family in his RRS (the wifes mini van was sunk in the water ~ a quick look and a nod as if to say "we are the prepared bunch" ~ the disco moved 3 families to safety that day and i must say the pleasure of ownership comes from knowing the capabilities of the vehicle ~ we will live with the quirks !!
but then again they are nice when working
here is a great write up

Hi Pete (Norto),
I've felt your pain every time you've advised of a new problem.
While I suspect that my D3 has had an easier life than yours (and fewer k's - only 67000 km ) I think that a number of your problems were fairly minor & the major ones were more evident in the earlier versions (such as is mine ). Hopefully, I've escaped the turbo & diffs problems (where's the "fingers crossed emoticon? ).
The question that you now need to ask yourself is whether the problems on your D3 are now (largely) fixed, or whether you would be better off going for a later (2008+ as you say) with its more reliable reputation, but unknown faults. Obviously, the latter has warranty, which is also a factor.
Has anyone got a new 2p coin (can also be used for egr blanking - but not as successfully on the 2008+ models)?
Best of luck with your decision, but (for now) I'll be keeping mine.
Kind Regards,
Peter (the other one) The Bearded Dragon

It looks like the rattle iscoming from the steering rack.
My trade price is $1850.......the aftermarket warranty should cover it Pete

I've not had mine that long but had had many LR's over the years. It's a fact of life that as things become more sophisticated there is more potential for them to go wrong.
So far, in 9000 miles I've had the gearbox remapped (snatching 1st gear)
Steering wheel replaced
Rear ARB bushes replaced.
All under warranty.
despite these niggles I still consider it to be the best LR I've ever owned. In fact, I would say, in terms of capability and suitability for purpose, I would say it is the best vehicle I've ever owned period.
Does the school run providing excellent safety for my beautiful son.
Does the shopping.
Pulls the tintent
Goes pretty much anywhere I like to go
Is well at home at the shooting club
Equally respectable in the management car park at work
Servicing costs are reasonable
Parts costs are reasonable
My only complaint is the aching face muscles from all the smiling
Now, compare that with my last car, a 2004 Merc E500 estate. In 18 months of ownership it had over 5000 quid's worth of warranty work. A 72000 service cost me 900 quid. Tyres were 210 quid a corner. All this and it was nowhere near as capable as the D3. Oh, and resale values are dire on Mercs, the main reason I am in a D3 and not a GL500.
Would I change it? Yes, for a D4 I think once the initial rush is over. Certainly not for a RRS (too girlie) although a FFRR TDV8 might just tempt me That engine is blindingly good (land Rover - are you listening? D4 maybe??)
No, all things considered I reckon I can live with stuff going wrong. The trade off in terms of, well, everything really for extra reliability is too much. It would mean buying a Honda and that would never do. No Sir-ee.
All hail the mighty LandRover.

I am @ 105k now. Owned it since 54k
Faults:
- Compressor
- Rear tailgate (I fixed it)
- Brake booster
- Transmission Valve pack
Just replace my disks and Brake pads.
Went bush last week end and put a hole in the side wall of one of my 8 month old AT2
Looks like i have not had the full LR experience

and looking at your gallery that's not just the school run.
there's a few of us up here that's LOVE to be able to go away for the sort of treks you guys get to go on down there,
I can only imagine that morocco is the closest comparison up here,
any of the euro lot spend time regularly in morocco? are there many issues?
from reading around on here when the boys go, they do go prepared for most eventualities..
BTW, am not knocking your driving, in fact the opposite, you're a bunch of lucky feckers with some great terrain.. one wife.......livid
