Third row seating - retrofitting of speakers to D pillar
Hi all - anyone retrofitted speakers to the D pillar on a D4?
I have a 2014 HSE but it wasn't spec'd with the speakers right at the back of the cabin though I know that it was an option on new vehicles.
As far as parts go of there will need to be the replacement trim and of course speakers but is the wire harness there ready to accept a connection? I also wonder whether the config of the vehicle needs to be changed - any thoughts?
Thanks

Having owned both, I’d suggest, if it possible, to listen to the more powerful system that has the speakers in the rear pillars as standard. I can’t say I noticed any significant difference, they both sound great 👍2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I have now bought replacement trim for the D pillar that incorporates the speakers. I plan to wire up the speakers directly to the amp. Fingers crossed!

Is all the wiring for these speakers there as standard or would you need to take feeds from say the rear door speaker?

I have at last got around to updating this thread.
I purchased two second hand D pillar speakers off eBay and set about fitting them. It was quite straightforward but I did have to complete a work around.
The work around was that the Amplifier fitted to my HSE D4 did not have the output channel for the rear D pillar. So, I was faced with either having to replace the amp for an upgraded one or connect the new speakers into an existing circuit. I chose the latter.
As you can see from the photos, I removed the old trim and connected up speaker wire to both sides. I then ran the cable behind the trim through to the B pillar. Removing the B pillar trim I located the speaker wiring for the rear door speakers and spliced in the D pillar speakers IN SERIES NOT PARALLEL.
This is important as to connect in parallel would have overloaded the amp (if you don't know what I mean by series/parallel then Google it, there are loads of helpful sites).
It was then a case of re-fixing the trim and the job was done in around an hour.
Of course, when you set the 'fade' to the rear speakers, you cannot isolate the door speakers from the D pillar but I have not found this to be a problem.
Was it worth it? From the front row seats, the in car entertainment sound is definitely more enveloping but not jaw dropping different. Passengers in the 3rd row seats are much happier as they can now enjoy the music/ radio etc.
So, for the cost of two second hand speaker panels and some speaker wire I am pleased with the result!
