Thinking of upgrading from D3 to D4 - opinions please |
|
I am think of upgrading my 2005 D3 TDV6 SE to a new diesel D4
The stealer has given me a price difference of $11,155 between the base model TDV6 and the SDV6 SE model
That seems a lot of money when effectively the only difference is the size of the wheels (& brakes) and the size of the engine (2.7L to 3.0L). (Both models have leather and both now come with 7 seats)
I was thinking the base TDV6 model with the engine remapped would be better value. What do others think
The 2011 SE model no longer comes with Xenon headlights and these are now an option at $750
(also an option on the TDV6 at $1,000). Are Xenon worth it
I would really appreciate anyone's opinion. 2005 SE TDV6, white; remapped to 185Kw; Black widow drawers & cargo barrier; underbody radiator guard; Mitchell bros tow hitch; rhino roof racks; Traxide duel battery system; GME 3440 UHF; Alpine W502 entertainment unit with front & rear camera, HiTv GPS & Hema off-road maps.

hi gbl, a couple of points:
-i'm not sure if you can remap the 2.7 D4 yet in the way I would like to do it - there are some chips available, but i'm not sure about remaps at this stage in Australia (I am waiting to here back from people...) - others can chime in here.
-i suspect that you should be able to get a base model 2.7 D4 with no extras for about $71K on the road or less
- i have never had xenons, but on every 4wd i have owned i have wished for better headlights and have ordered them on my new D4 (which may be here next week !!!!!)
- i have come from a diesel landcruiser with 96kW and have travelled far with a fully loaded vehicle struggling to maintain 110km/h on the flat. 140kW is enough for me.
good luck with the decision. D4 arriving in 2 weeks

I have just been through a similar exercise to you, but I already have an MY08 TDV6. While the new 3.0TD is nice, for me it's not nice enough to justify the extra expense, and I could so no point at all in going from a 2.7TD D3 to a 2.7TD D4.
I normally change cars over at the 2.5 year mark, but I've had the D3 for nearly 3.5 years now, and just in the process of refinancing as I'll keep it for good.
So your D3 is close to 3 years older than mine, so perhaps I can see why you'd want a new car, but in my opinion the extra cost of D4 isn't justified. 2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather
2012 TDI Passat - they reckon the DSG is crap, I reckon it's awesome
2010 MY11 Mitsubishi Challenger - Gone (it was a "Challenging Year")
2007 MY08 TDV6 SE - gone

Thanks Luker and Dan for your comments
I thought the 2.7 in the D4 was the same motor as in the D3.
Therefore shouldn't the same remapping method/software work on the D4?

I really do not see what the thing is with Bi Xenons - I have them in my RRS but the lights are no better than my old 98 Freelander with its halogens - in fact they are not much better than the halogens in my 101 but you do sit much higher so have a different outlook.
Like you if I were to buy a D4 I would have trouble laying out the extra for the 3.0. Yes the 3.0 has more oomph but if you do not need it why pay between $11,000 and $15,000 for it - as said the 2.7 can be chipped to bring it up to 3.0 power for $1000 but then the 3.0 can be chipped to bring it up to the 3.6 TDV8 levels.
Now when resale is taken into account, I feel the 3.0 will be better but will it offset the initial purchase premium who knows.

I don't know what the D4 halogen lights are like compared with the bi-xenons, but more high beam light will be required if driving country roads at night even with bi-xenons. I fitted a HID kit to the halogen high beams and those lights absolutely swamp the bi-xenon high beam lights, even though they still are very much possum lights.
The 3.0 engine torque is nice, but I haven't owned a 2.7 so don't have a useful comparison. One reason why I got the 3.0 was because I expected the 2.7 to be discontinued worldwide within a short time and this would affect 2.7 resale values badly, coupled with the possibility that I might have to sell mine within a year or 2. However so far its only been discontinued in the EU.
My TD5 D2a was remapped and with its large intercooler and freed-up exhaust, it was supposed to be producing a little more power and torque than a 2.7 but it was no match whatsoever for a 2.7. The D3 6-speed auto box may have given the 2.7 a significant benefit over the D2's 5-speed manaual whereas a remapped 2.7 has a gbox using the same number of gears with the same ratios as the 3.0 and therefore not have a gearbox disadvantage.
A significant disadvantage for me was the big brakes preventing fitment of 17" rims, but those brakes are now gone. There is also an after-market 18" rim that fits, although the tyre range may be limited depending on how HD and what size the tyres need to be. Home of LLAMS, for LRs and Jeep GCs

Hello All,
I am also changing my 05 D3 TDV6S 5 seater with 135k (twin batts plus a spare 17" steel wheel) to a base model 2.7 D4 so thank you Lucas for the hint on what I should pay. Anyone have any idea of trade in values or is it better to sell privately?

THe D4 2.7 can be flashed using Bluefin. 32 bit comms so different to D3. BAS do not do one but are working on it.
Unless you are towing, for the money I would stick to the 2.7 and re-map. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Guys
Thanks for all of your comments.
To clarify a couple of points:
* The stealer quoted me $80k on the road for the TDV6 (including leather and metallic paint and 7 seats. Apparently no longer made in the 5 seat guise or with cloth seats). In the next breath, he offered a discount which brought the price back to around $75k
* I will be towing a 19' van weighing 2.5t.

Hi guys, I'm also going thru the exact same exercise, my 2005 D3 SE with 126,000 kms has done its job.
Similar quotes from the dealer, although not as low as $75K for a 2.7L at this stage.
Trade quotes I have ranging from $26K to $31K, a long way short of my expectations.
So based on that and the news of what the MY12 will have, I have decided to wait until next year.
But I'll buy a Subaru Forester as an interim car and sell the D3 privately whislt it still has 18 months of extended warranty. D4 TDV6 MY13' - 2 weeks away!
RRS S/C MY10' - muchly loved and just gone
D3 TDV6 SE MY06' - loved and gone

Discount link above has the SA price of just over $77,000 but the Qld price is $75,200.

maybe i was a bit exuberant with my $71k for a base model 2.7D - maybe 73K is more like it
previously landrover have done regular deals for $74990 on roads, so i would have thought you would be able to beat this.
cheers

My 2c's worth.
Bi Xenon is 100 times better and effective than Halogen. Having had both, I found it hard to go back to Halogens. IMHO it is well worth the $750/$1000 upgrade.
2.7 versus 3.0
I have not looked at the 2.7, but it would be old versus new. Aus as far as I know is the only country offering the 2.7 as an option. 180Kw/600Nm in standard guise leave a lot of room to remap if the need arrises.
Do whatever you are comfortable with, and what the budget allows. Both vehicles are great. Why is the fear of long words called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?
