thinking of changing tow car
I've changed my van to a slightly smaller Coachman VIP (from a twin axle Crusader) and later this year I am thinking of changing my tow car.
I've had the disco for 9 years and previously had aTD5 so I fancy a change, especially as now I don't need the extra kerbweight.
The caravan MIRO is 1650 kgs so I need something fairly substantial to pull it.
I've looked at Disco 4 (obviously), VW Touareg, Santa Fe, Audi Q5 and BWM X3.
The new Volvo XC90 looks good in the brochures but not out yet and I think this will be too dear until discounts are available later.
I would appreciate input from members on here to help me make up my mind.
Will the disco 4 feel enough of a change?
I'm also worried about the lack of spare wheel. the fashion seems to be a space saver or an inflation kit. Both of which do not appeal as I tow on the continent extensively.
However, I have had 1 puncture in 9 years with the current disco and that was on the drive. So am I worrying unnecessarily or will sods law come into play.
I think Greenflag and Red Pennant recovery charge an excess if you haven't got a spare.
My favourite so far is the Touareg which used to come with a space saver but even that now has been replaced with an inflation kit and can of goo. Should I be surprised that when I enquired at two dealers
neither could answer my question whether a full sized spare/space saver was an option! and whether you could tow with the space saver.
Suggestions?

Yes the D4 is noticeably better than the D3 to drive. Go and get a test drive at a dealer
You can specify a full size spare if buying new (£155 I believe), or buy one 2nd hand from here or ebay.
I'd not tow with a space saver - and they're only good for 50 miles at < 50mph anyway.

I don't tow too often but my D3 is best one I ever used much better than a TD5 which is limited by the rear overhand . You can tow max hitch load with D3/4 when fully loaded which is not the case with a D2. Towing 1650 kg would be a doddle.

Did a very similar thing last year. Changed from a twin axle Bailey Wyoming to new single axle Buccaneer Fluyt, but I still kept the Disco 4. Would not change her for the world. New caravan is a tad lighter making the Disco 4 feel even more capable.
The Disco 3 is worlds apart from the Disco 4 when used in the camping/caravanning world, there's not a finer car on the market at present to match it.Nothing is foolproof as the ingenuity of fools is endless.

I tow a Challenger 480 - 1380kgs all up, or something like that.
Have to check it's still attached.
Would I tow with anything else? No. Not by choice.
I use it as my daily driver. I should drive something economical, nippy, and easy to slot into miniscule parking spaces.

So I float in rarefied, leather-clad excellence knowing that should I need to venture up a gravel-strewn mountain track (or Aldi's carpark) I'm in a better machine than the rest of the peasants.
Try a D4. If you think it's not for you, then I'm sure you'll find something that suits. But for me, the Disco wins every time."The quality remains long after the price has been forgotten."Henry Royce

Now't else to say. Its a D4 every time, its the real deal. Anything else is a compromise. The grass always seems greener on the other side, but its just hiding a pile of steaming .

thanks for all the replies and guidance. As I said I have had a RR and two discos and just wonder if its time for change.
I've now looked at the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 but not impressed.
I'm hoping my wife will read this topic and agree that we should have a disco 4. At least it will have a spare wheel!
the present disco 3 has been an excellent towcar and very reliable with just the normal issues that are well covered on here and have been fixed with help from this site.
Looks like I'll be staying a bit longer,
