Thanks for all the Fish - farewell for now.
All,
I just wanted to thank you for 4 years of help, support and enjoyment.
The privilege of owning a D3 has come to an end for me, albeit against my will.
As you may remember (posts passim) I had decided not to upgrade to a D4, but instead make do and mend, budgeting to sort out the suspension light, repaint the wheels, and sort out all the other bits. Why not?
SWMBO however, decided that we needed to replace on grounds of safety (what??!). And it turns out a happy wife = happy something. Sadiq Khant also has been making it increasingly difficult/expensive to have a 13 year old diesel in London, even if we did only really put the miles on it in the country.
Sure, there were a few niggles and unexpected costs here and there, but she never caused any major misery. 4 years and 60k miles included fully loaded dashes to Geneva/Genoa/Nice in a manner that would have left Grand Tour and Top Gear teams marveling and ache free. We moved house twice with her and even impulse furniture buys on fleabay without checking sizes never once fazed her - beds, sofas, desks, you name it, all just fitted in.
I am going to miss this car more than any that I have previously owned, for sheer versatility, capacity, comfort, ruggedness, expensiveness (not ideal), forgivability (my forgiving it), character, Englishness, overcomplicated/engineeredness, size, weight, personality, I just loved it.
And the follow on to that is you lot. I have never found a better, more informed, interesting, interested and funny bunch of guys (mostly, I guess). I have made stupid comments, asked stupid questions, but mostly not said anything, just dipped into the immense lake of knowledge that you have put together over the years. I doubt/know the Cherman equivalents won't hold a candle you you lads, not on humour, knowledge or passion. I thank and salute you and this most excellent forum.
I leave you with HJI353's last laugh. While she was parked in the Part Exchange bay on that sad day, I was tasked with unloading the 2/3 full boot of post Christmas stuff. The new steed, 4x4 also, 12 years her junior and 111,000 miles lighter was unable to accomodate it all. Centre seat down between the boys and loaded up to the roof and in the 3 footwells, we only just managed to cram everything in. (And no Command Position).
So godspeed to you and your happy new keeper, HJI353. You have done us proud. I hope whoever it is keeps the plate and the disco3.co.uk sticker which I left nestling at the top of the back screen. Keep spotting, team.
What a car - they don't make them like that any more (I had a drive in a D5, actually a lot better on the inside and to drive than I was expecting), no purpose nor sense of solidity, nor soul.
Many thanks again guys.
That then, is that.

Nice post
I joined this forum back in 2005 as an early D3 owner and have kept looking/reading/contributing ever since. Despite having probably owned more D3's/4's than anyone (and spent more money in the process!!) and even though I haven't owned one for a while I still enjoy the chat/banter/pi$$ taking/knowledge more than any other car forum I have found, so don't go, stay around, great bunch of people on here.
Like you alluded to, there is just nothing else on the market currently that really stirs the emotion, some good cars out there but nothing with the character of the old D3. I am even having bad thoughts about buying an early example that has been cherished and kept up to, an early silver HSE in totally unmodified form is my current desire.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Great post and a good poke in the eye for the increasing number of `crankshaft snappers'.
