Temperature gauge
Sat in my D3 fiddling with a new audio system that i had gotten put in (will post info on this soon), engine on, the vehicle was running for about 20 mins. Then there was a burning smell..I look up and saw smoke coming from the engine..and the temp guage hit the roof...red light was on, i shut the vehicle off..then started it some time after and then it was back to normal. Has anyone ever encountered this before? What does this mean? Is it a fault...external temp was around 3 or so degrees...Also where is the best place to get engine oil for the sucker..the 5w-30 is hard to find...
Geez, that doesn't sound normal I've had my car idling for that long and the temp guage hardly moves.'06 TDV6 SE AUTO BUCKINGHAM BLUE

I have to say, if it was not for the fact that you say the temp guage had hit the roof and the warning light came on, I would say don't panic because its the fuel burning heater (Webasto) keeping the temp up. So I really have no idea.
I also would have at least checked the coolant level before restarting it.
Sounds very odd to me.
5w 30 is sold at every Land Rover dealer in the land, at reasonable cost too.
