TDV8 in the D3 - Your opinions.
The arrival of the new V8 diesel is quite a hot topic on the forum. Knowing that the forum is read by Land Rover HQ and the like, thought it would be interesting to measure our opinions on whether we would like to see it in the D3 sooner (like now) rather than later (if ever).
Price and the like, will obviously govern our decesion to purchase, but we're only trying to guage opinion.
Feel free to suggest an option.
You just never know...D3 HSE V8...

I personally think LR would be on a winner and they may lose sales to the other models for a reason, because they did such a good job on the D3.
we want it and we want it now.
Think you pay about an extra £8K to get the TDV8 in the RRSport so although it sounds like it is a fabulous engine that kind of price difference would rule it out for me. Zermatt silver 06 reg.

When you compare the engine and performance of the D3 with all the competitors, it's the worse performer and the thirstiest. The TDV6 is a good engine, but the problem is because of the weight and I guess because of the aerodynamics.
I can understand if LR want to keep the TDV8 for the Range Rover Range, because lets face it, the D3 has raised the game and there isn't much between them. However, the D3 does need to address the economy and the performance. The TDV8 will probably do that, but then it would make the D3 too expensive for the sector.
What LR need to do is maybe just tweak the TDV6 (like TurboChip do) to address the initial delay when pulling away and to give it some oomph when you want to overtake. If that was fixed, then the TDV6 would be good enough and we could leave the TDV8 for the Range Rover range.
LR should make more use of the Sport mode on the auto box. When in Sport mode, the engine should change to give you maximum performance and sod the fuel economy. And when in normal drive mode, it should be tweaked to maximum economy and perform like it does currently or worse. In other words, they should give it the TurboChip mapping, make it switchable so it only used this map when in Sport mode.
Or maybe they should consider putting two turbos back on the TDV6 like the Jaguar S-type has. Surely they can have two turbos working at different ranges, so one kicks in very early at low revs and the other takes over later. Don't Saab do this sort of thing?Matt
Sorting out the lag and fuel consumption would be a good start whilst ensuring there is a difference between sport and normal modes would be sufficent I feel.
Obviously the manual boys wouldn't have the latter option.

Aussie blokes love their V8s, especially the Nissan Pootrol and 100 series Cruiser drivers. 'Nothing like V8'
Maybe marketing wise it would work for Oz as at least it is a V8. It would appeal to a market that otherwise would bypass the TDV6.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I've personally never found the TDV6 wanting in relation to its intended purpose. I do love my V8s (My previous car was a Ford BA XR8 manual with 260kW, 500Nm and "only" 1800kgs), but I've just always found the TDV6 wonderful, even stepping straight in from my XR8. Indeed, I don't know what some people are refering to when they mention lack of initial pickup, other than perhaps in the odd on/off/on again throttle situations.
If I wanted to win the traffic light Grand Prix, I would have bought a WRX (yuck!). The only valid reason for anything more would have to be ultra-heavy duty towing. Leave the TDV8 for the posers, I say...
