Brilliant video, this bloke knows what he is doing, obviously not his first attempt or his last I suspect.
Very interesting and informative.
As for the lack of locating tabs on the shells, I would have thought that Ford or Land Rover would have come up with a modification for when rebuilding these delicate engines?

Fascinating stuff!

One comment on the first video - he said that the bearings spin after the bearing surfaces have become worn and the shells rotate, as there are no lugs to hold them in place. I’ve see it written, many times, that the lugs don’t make any difference, as they are only there to aid assembly and they have no affect on stopping a bearing from spinning.

So, who’s right?

The lugs I’ve seen (not on these engines) would stop a baring rotating unless the forces are great enough to shear them off or bend them into profile. Is the issue that the shells weld themselves to the journal’s and will rotate regardless?

I believe on the gen 2 engines, there are tabs on the bearings......and they still have been known to rotate.

Please don't take that as gospel, but I swear I have read that previously.

Interesting videos and thanks for posting Gary.

I notice when he is torquing down the main caps he is doing them sequentially. I always thought it was best practice to work from the centre, outwards, in both directions to make sure everything was bolted down evenly? Confused

Ur very welcome and indeed by the sounds of it the tabs make no difference what so ever in preventing them from spinning

So wondering that other 19.5 oil pump cover, could that indeed be the answer to stop shells from spinning by creating a bigger volume of oil around the crank ???

I also thought that, going from centre outwards, maybe he was just doing that as an example of how the shell caps are refitted

Must admit I learnt a lot after watching these and made more sense ref heat/ friction and how the crank then grabs the shells and spins them

Alas I haven’t got the engineering knowledge so clutching at straws really but would be so good to finally find a solution to stop them spinning

Only thing I’ve seen is that 19.5 oil pump, nothing from JLR as of yet
