Tappets and "pinking" ?

My engine has recently become quite a bit louder, especially under load, with both the above being the most obvious.
It is not far off its second service,so will an oil change "cure" the tappet noise or do I need to direct them towards something else ?
As far as the pinking goes,I have tried "premium" fuels with no obvious reduction....

Hi Euan,

Did you get anywhere with this? I suspect it might be the time of year, as I've noticed similar noises when it's cooler outside. Fuel has different additives put in over winter etc. Oddly enough, in April this year I was driving a new Range Rover being used to video from. One of the vehicles being recorded was a LR press D4 HSE towing a ballasted twin axle caravan. One of the manoeuvres was for me to sit at 40 mph and the D4 to overtake. When doing the overtake I was surprised at the racket the D4 made (photographer videoing out of the back of the RR with the tailgate open). The video can actually be seen on Practical Caravan's website in the Tow Car Awards section. Perhaps we got used to how refined the engine initially appeared, but now hear every little noise, and others' have certainly caught up (and bettered in some cases) now.

Nigel

Hi Nigel....filled up with some Shell nitro plus, and thought initially it was bit better, but on reflection I'm not so sure....service light has now come on and will be due it's 2nd service shortly.....I'm going to mention it and see what they suggest....it seems to pull fine,it just sounds a bit laboured......I'll just turn the radio up a bit Thumbs Up
