Talk me off the edge..

Hi all, very long time lurker, looking for guidance, crystal ball gazing and the lottery numbers Smile

Currently have a 14 plate Freelander 2 XS that's done us pretty well so far. in the last 5 1/2 years. However we really could do with something bigger, and the Mrs may be starting up a business that might require the space in the back to transport things that simply wouldn't fit in the FL2.
We were also a two car family up until last year, and we've struggled quite a bit of logistics only having the one vehicle. Thus a bigger family vehicle (D4) and a car for use if I need to head to the office and the other vehicle is being used

We've always both lusted after a D4, and I've read many of the horror stories re the cranks snapping. However I wonder if it's going to be a similar roll of the dice on a similar vehicle

I've spotted https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1553071028413553/ Which looks intriguing. I've popped them a message to see if they have evidence of the belts being done at the last service. Happy to forgo the cosmetic bits as I'd get the wheels refurbed and a PDR person to look at the boot.

However, should I be giving any D4's a wide berth entirely. Other option would be to purchase a D3, but wonder if that's just trading some problems for others. Failing that I'll go back to looking at L322s.... Whistle

Unfortunately we need the space. Often if we go away now we'll need the roofbox on the FL2 as well.
Got a not so small 13yr old, nearly 2 year old, working cocker spaniel and the Mrs.

I'll maybe be looking at a cheapish estate for the second car.

There’s a very nice D4 going up here, (not mine). Some recent work done on it by Disco Mikey, I had a look at it in the week but not quite what I’m looking for but a very nice car… former forum member selling but only advertised locally…

It’s on GumtreeUK near Peterhead, search … “Land Rover, DISCOVERY, Estate, 2012, Other, 2993 (cc), 5 doors”

Very cheap flights up! Laughing

Whilst there is a risk of the crank going it is very small percentage wise - I seem to recall it being about 6% Very Happy

Tempting about the one up near you Nige, I'm not in any rush. Obviously having someone like DiscoMikey having seen it in the flesh recently would be a massive help, just purely for the insight into condition and possible upcoming bills.
We'd hopefully be keeping this new one for a while again, so age and mileage will play a factor.

I'll be donning geek-mode later and comparing boot dimensions on other stuff too.

Go for it Very Happy

If you have always wanted one then roll the dice.

You are more likely to he happy with the decision than not in my view.

Life is to short to worry about what might happen reference crank etc.

Definitely considering my options now. Still trying to work out how the people all around me pay for these cars. I've only ever bought second hand cars with cash sometimes assisted by a personal loan for the difference.
I'm on a reasonable salary now so maybe I need to figure things out a bit more and find if I can for one of the more later years/lower mileage options.

Have at least £2k set aside for any big jobs and you should be fine. They don’t cost much more than many other cars when all else is factored in. EPB, prop shafts, turbo manifolds, cross over pipes, etc are all costly jobs if you get a garage to do them but should only need doing once in most cars history, everything else (including belts) is just consumables..

The alternative is to go newer and have a good warranty Whistle

I’m sure others will chip in with other bits as well… but this is from my experience and I’m in Disco number 5 Very Happy

Yeah, I've previously taken out the LR Warranty but I've always got a credit card in case of anything large.
Just trying to do some man maths to make it work. The newer vehicle I can get the better, it's an opportunity to treat ourselves a bit if I can.

There's not really many other cars that we'd both desire or offer the practicality that we're after. I don't mind the look of either models of the Xc90 but they don't set my loins on fire either!

Speak to Moo about the XC90, he's had one for a while and loves it, I have a Volvo (XC70) as well as the D3 so best of both worlds Very Happy

Go for a D4 - you know you want one and the "man-maths" will work in your favour Laughing

Yes, the cranks can go and yes there are other expensive items that can go at any time but that is the gamble you take with any car.

As Nige said, keep some money/credit card in reserve and enjoy it Very Happy

Yeah, definitely rather interested now. I've got Woodside Garage about 15 mins away from me and they seem to have a reasonably good rotating selection of vehicles, plus they handle FL2s so potentially might be able to P/X to avoid being carless.

We all only live once, and with a Px, personal loan and some rummaging down the back of the sofa I should be able to make something work Very Happy

Not many people own their cars these days, even 2nd hand stuff can be bought via pcp, so people can buy way better cars than they can afford to run.

Depending where you live the possibility of more LEZ zones might be coming your way, if so you will need a euro6 model, but they are still 25k and upwards.
