Tailgate Guards

Has anyone got one? Any recommendations for manufacturer? How secure are they?

THe ability to leave the car "secure" while having the tailgate open to keep the dogs cool would be great, but never actually seen one fitted and I'm a bit concerned about how easy they'd be to get into?

Hi J

I had one in a RRS and a VW Touareg.

they are okay but not really secure other than to stop the dogs jumping out, they are only secured by relatively soft fixings so could be yanked out if someone hjad the mind to do it.

In my D3 I've just used a "Croft dog cage" which has lockable doors and using a strap is lashed to the luggage eyes in the floor.

Keeps the dog hair in one place !!!

I've recently bought a Barjo gate for the D3 but haven't fitted it yet.

I had one on our V70 and though it was an excellent piece of kit, I wouldn't have left the car with the tailgate open for any length of time nor in a 'dubious' area but the option of keeping the dogs cool and locked away was most welcome.

Suppose the likelyhood of someone using it as a theft approach is dependant on what dogs you have....not sure our 2 golden retrievers would be much of a detterant but who'd break in past 2 rotweillers? Shocked

I'm not sure what you are looking for, but would this perhaps perform the same function?

I think its more to do with leaving the whole tailgate open rather tham just the window. Im quite interested as what people might come up with to solve this dilema i would like to open the tailgate and leave the dog in his crate. i could lock the crate but doesnt solve anyone walking off with the crate with the dog in it.
Can the tailgate button be disabled anyway? or was it designed to not be visable with the upper tailgate part covering it with the boot shut

I'm not so fussed on the idea of lintran type box - had one in the past and definitely keep all the muck in one place but big and heavy if you need to remove it, which I'd have to do several times a week. I'm not so much worried about keeping the dogs in, but more to stop either them or the D3 being nicked.

We use a combination of:
- dog-bag
- privacy glass
- "Team Heko" window thingies. Allows you to open all 4 windows approx 1" even when it is raining, and it's not even really visible unless you are up close.

I just spoke to Barjo about their product and they categorically stated it's only there to stop the dog jumping out and not to offer any sort of security - which isn't what I'm after. Their guard only attaches to small brackets screwed into the plastic trip at the top so isn't very secure.

Whilst I wouldn't ever rely on it, my dogs will only jump out when they're told. What I'm after is some way of securing the car with the tailgate open if I've got the dogs with me and need to leave them for any length of time.

Not sure that Ventlock would be the answer as with the upper tailgate adjar, you'd then be able to press the lower tailgate release button and open the whole lot??

No more pearls of wisdom out there?? Big Cry

I like the dog bag!

Does he complain when you zip it up?

I'm sure that our spanner would howl like a moon crazed wolf if she got put in a bag - but it would probably stop her from going crazy whenever she saw a roadworker, motorcyclist or truck driver in a hi-viz jacket.

Our 16 year old Collie cross would simply go to sleep....

Hensoni - no complaints ~ he is a she Very Happy and there is another (choccie) lab in there that you can't see.

Bery impressed with the dog bag tbh - the mesh definately restricts rear vision when it is erect, but it can be folded into the (supplied) rucksack in less than 1 minute when the dogs aren't in transit. Retains all the Disco3 versatility.

J with regards to the Ventlock and being able to get to the lower tailgate button to open it. I was thinking maybe with the ventlock in place maybe the lower tailgate wouldnt be able to fold open. I admit it would depend on how the Ventlock attaches to the locks and wether they are locked into place which i assume they must be otherwise anyone could just take them off and open the boot. So lets just say they are locked into place surely that would mean even if anyone uses the button to open the lower tailgate it wouldnt open very well, if atall because there is a bar keeping a constant distance between them. Unless by opening the lower tailgate it releases the way the ventlock is secured as maybe it was designed to be fixed to a fixed lock which obviously the opening tailgateisnt.

Sorry for the long waffle think i will go back to the Ventlock website to see if i can answer some of my questions

Right i have been out to the car for a look with the laptop to look at the pic of the Ventlock at the sametime.
I have concluded I THINK IT COULD WORK(sorry for shouting).

The hook of the ventlock would attach around the latch on the upper tailgate and screw securely into place as described on the Ventlock website http://www.ventlock.com/pop_tgfaq_long.php and the other end would fit into the lock on the lower tailgate just like the latch of the upper tailgate does. Now it is in place you can lock the car with the fob as normal and now the latch end of the Ventlock cant be removed and the other end cant be removed as you need to unscrew it which you cant do because latch is locked into lower tailgate.
Even when you use the button to open the lower tailgate (which you are still able to use even with the car locked)the fixed bar stops the opening increae in size or it might even not let it move atall.

Just when I think I have a solution I think of another "What If". Maybe if you open the lower tailgate to try and access the boot with the Ventlock in place would it damage the lock, this is where the Disco differs from other cars as it was probably designed to have atleast one fixed point.

I give up I do think it would work though but suppose there is only one 100% way of finding out. If anyone buys one please let me know.

Well thats given my brain a little workout for 10 mins I need a rest now
