Do these symptoms mean my clutch is on the way out? |
|
Hi all,
I've had the D3 since 2010 - it's an 55 plate. It's done just over 145,000 miles. The clutch has never been changed. About a month ago the feel of the clutch changed quite quickly so that now the bite is lower, it makes a slight scraping sort of noise coming from somewhere in or near the gearbox as I press the pedal. Possibly a slight rattle when the pedal is fully depressed. It doesn't seem to slip though. No error codes logged relating to the clutch. It's never lost the XY calibration that some people seem to experience. It's not getting noticeably worse either, or perhaps I'm just not noticing small changes.
Does it sound like the clutch is on the way out or something else?
How long to clutches last in a D3 anyway?
Cheers
James

Thanks, good to know. Not done any towing. It's had an easy life for a D3. Do you mean juddering as it starts to bite? I do get a little bit of that sometimes, but not every time.
I've just been out again to get a better feel for the clutch pedal. It does nothing for the first inch and a half or so of travel - almost no resistance at all (it used to feel responsive right from the top of the travel). Then as the resistance kicks in, I get the scrapy rattly sound. This goes away again with the pedal all the way to the floor.
I had something not too dissimilar happen on my old D1 years ago. When the garage replaced the clutch they said the clutch itself wasn't all that bad, but the release fork was very badly worn.

James, my clutch just gave up at 120k miles with very little warning.
It was slipping in high gears but to be totally honest, I'd not noticed. It went for a dealer service, was collected from my home and failed on the M60 when they were returning it. The driver said it just stopped. Stunk to high heaven too.
The main dealer who was returning the car accepted part liability fortunately, but it still cost me half of a main dealer clutch replacement, which I think was circa £800.
In short, they can just let go. Mods:

That doesn't sound good. We drive to Switzerland most years for our summer holiday fully loaded with camping gear. It would be a disaster if it happened during that trip.

Get underneath the dash and check the pedal itself just had similar symptoms and the clutch pedal had fractured and wasn’t engaging properly causing same sort of noise and a low pedal

When my release bearing was noisy, the noise went away when I put my foot on the clutch. It lasted for years like that without slipping or clutch pedal position changing until I had the engine out for other reasons.
Sounds like the first step towards failure of something in there, I would get it changed ASAP, especially if going on a long trip abroad. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Best advice, drive it and enjoy it.
If you take too much notice of some of the sob stories on this forum, you'd never get behind the wheel again. Sh@ happens, if it can go wrong, it probably will, so enjoy what you have. Mods:
