That is correct Gary, its been a legal requirement since the 80's that the driver has visual indication that the towed vehicle indicators are working.

That's not strictly true though Mark. It is widely accepted that the legislation can equally be interpreted that the driver has visual indication that the towed vehicle indicators are not working.

Many newer designed cars (last few years, not D3/4), with their complex electronic systems usually connected to the manufacturer supplied loom rather than an aftermarket one, tell you when the trailer lights don't work rather than when they do.

This is the case on our Volvo; hooked up the van, popped out one of the indicator bulbs on the van, put the indicator or and the dash display helpfully comes up with bong "Warning trailer LH indicator inoperative". Because I was bored I tried the same test with a brake light on the van and sure enough bong "Warning trailer stop lamp inoperative" displayed. The car doesn't display anything when the lights are operating correctly.

Has legislation changed now, is the audible warning no longer legal Question

I don't think the legislation has changed, I think it always said audible or visual not both. The interpretation has changed such that it can either indicate that the trailer lights are working ok or indicate that they are not working ok.

Magwhy Did you get everything working correctly, as my rear parking sensors beep continuously when reversing with a trailer. It is most annoying. Question

The rear parking sensors should not work with a trailer attached, the car reversing lights should not come and neither should the suspension rise when any off road mode on TR is selected Thumbs Up , the caravan indicator light only comes on when the indicators blink.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

There is a thread running over on RRS where there it seems that on the MY13 RRS, when you plug in the trailer, the rear sensors are disabled as they should, but also it seems that the front sensors are disabled also.
