You need to remove the air bag to then be able to remove the switch packs. If you're talking about taking the switch packs apart there's a thread somewhere about it as the poster was looking to paint their's 'piano black'.D4 - Stornoway Grey

You,ll need the little hooked tool to remove the aitbag, about £8 on ebay. Make sure the cars asleep before this. Once removed and unplugged, the switch panels have 2 philips screws on the rear that need undoing before they can be removed. D4 GS 12MY

You'll also need to remove the rear cowl from the wheel as the switch packs are held in place by a pair of clips which you can't undo whilst it's still fitted.
You'll need a T20 screwdriver to remove the 4 screws first then there are 4 plastic expansion clips that fit through the frame of the wheel itself, these are best pushed back through from the wheel frame for reasons that will be obvious once you have the air bag out.
I'm planning on doing a steering wheel upgrade over the weekend so will try & take some photos & post on Monday.D4 - Stornoway Grey

That would be good.
I was going to carbon wrap the surrounds but it may not be worth the bother.

A little later than promised but here are a few photos that show how the switch packs are fitted to the steering wheel.
Assuming first of all that the air bag has been removed and the wheel is off the car.
Place the wheel face down on a suitable surface so you don't damage the leather. Then use a T20 screw driver to remove the two screws on each side, these are self tappers which screw into the switch pack itself, there is one at the top:
and one at the bottom:
When all four screws have been removed turn the wheel over and push each of the four retaining lugs back through the metal frame, there are two on each side, one at the top outside edge:
and one at the bottom;
With the rear cowl removed you can now remove the switch packs and unplug them.
(Note: if you have a flappy paddle wheel you will also need to remove the single screw holding each paddle in place as these go through into the metal frame and effectively hold the cowl on as well - they are T20 too.)
The internals of the switch packs can also be removed but as I was just doing a wheel swap I didn't do this so now photos I'm afraid.

Here's some pics of the switchpack internals. There are about 5 small screws on the back of each that need undoing to get them apart. You dont need to take the wheel off to get the switch packs off, you can get access to the 2 screws holding each from the rear.
