Sutherland and the Outer Hebrides...
Will be heading up to these remote parts in a new D4 HSE fairly soon.
Just wondered if anyone knew of any good off-road tracks to drive, particularly around Lochinver in Sutherland, or over on North Uist, Benbecula or South Uist?
Aside from the drive across the beach to Vallay on North Uist, I haven't ventured off road much before in these parts... Any good suggestions of where to head would be more than welcome!
Thanks...747_JK

Generally no green lanes in Scotland, tracks with permission only. No idea re beach access though. Booooootiful part of the world though, even from the tarmac. Don't forget the pics.

I'm not sure of anything around Lochinver but I have a few peat roads I can use around where I live in Kinlochbervie - mainly because I live here and cut peats. You will see some inviting tracks through the hills but they are mostly owned by sporting estates and they won't give you access.
I've not done it for a few years but, as far as I know, it's still ok to drive across Balnakiel Beach near Durness and out to Faraid Head. It is part of the Military training area and I have seen a couple of Land Rovers caught by the tide. One getting stuck and the other going to the rescue, then both of them being submerged. Not recommended in a shiny new HSE.
Enjoy your trip.2015 Discovery 4 HSE Corris with Blackpack

Make sure you do the Pilgrimage to the tea hut at Stoer Light north of Lochinver, got to be one of the more remote roadside Tea Huts in Britain http://www.living-the-dream.org.uk/Club Pie n Pea

Thank you, will be sure to check out Stoer Lighthouse and Kinlochbervie, two of my fave spots up there.
Not so sure about the beach where people have seen Land Rovers get stuck before, I think I will stick with my fun run across the sand at low tide to Vallay, off the island of North Uist. If it's not somewhere you know about, check out this other post of mine in the previous D4: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/vallay-house-...014.t89724
I was hoping there might be some fund tracks to try up the side of South Uist, or nearby, but I guess it is all privately owned land?
I do love the far North of Scotland, and the Outer Hebs - such a stunning place.747_JK

When is it you're heading up here? I'm overseas for the whole of June but home most of July. The peat roads aren't very challenging but the views are good. If you are here in July then I'll be happy to show you the way.2015 Discovery 4 HSE Corris with Blackpack

We're heading up to Clachtoll caravan site in August.
Part of the country I've never been to, and really looking forward to it There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.
