Suspension bush check - how to check hydro bushes etc?
I've not previously had anything to do with a vehicle with hydro bushes. Our D4 has a front end suspension clunk on fairly small bumps such as when going over driveway lips or the rail that a sliding gate runs on it. Given that it's at 155,000km and there's no evidence of the front lower control arms previously having been done I assume these are a likely culprit with the hydro bushes failed.
From what I've seen online sometimes you can observe the fluid leak from within them. But if this isn't the case, any tips or hints for checking these? Just the usual try and pry/move/wriggle all the joints looking for slop and play?Mine - MY09 L319 D3 HSE Lion 2.7 TDV6 and modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P

I’ve had mine done , I think you might need to get a metal bar and prise the bush to see movement. I had the clunk , want even picked up in the MOT but was when in the dealer for a service.

Sharply dab the breaks when travelling around 20mph+. When worn, the hydrabush (the rearmost bush in the front lower suspension arm) will always cause a knock when dabbing the brakes.Kev

I could see loads of movement in my rear uppers but just jacking up a wheel and pushing / pulling the tyre is different directions.
....edit, I guess this could also be a knacked wheel bearing so best get someone to watch to the bushes as you do it.

Bush
I just gently bounced mine up and down a high kerb. The clunk was obvious to hear and my indi identified which side by looking at the wheel horizontal movement on the bounce up.
If its clunking then it makes driving the car less enjoyable. Speed bumps in particular were cringeworthy. All else it didnt seem to make a noticeable difference.
Post replacement the car is a much more peaceful place to beDiscovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

Stuck a pry bar between the chassis mount and front lower control arm rear bush, didn't take my effort to move the arm a few mm outwards. When I physically looked at the limited bit of the hydrobush that I could see the rubber etc. looked damaged. Pricing up delivery now for a replacement set of OEM arms from the UK.Mine - MY09 L319 D3 HSE Lion 2.7 TDV6 and modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P

Agree, you need a specialist to check it out. Ours got through the MOT with two rear upper arms with worn out bushes. After it's first service they were immediately spotted by someone who knows their onions. lift the wheel off the floor, get a bar wedge it in and try to see if there's any play.

Hi
I changed my front lower control arms today. Discovery 4 has done 41k kms and is a 2015 MY. I used genuine Land Rover new arms and changed both.
The original failed bush was the left rear bush on the front control arm - the oil filled bush. It had split and some oil was leaking out and it was making a noise on small bumps. When I tested the bush when it’s still on the car with a tyre lever it moved a good few mm, maybe 7mm, and returned to the original place. The new bushes have a similar movement so I do not think it’s a very helpful test to determine if the bush is worn or not.
The better test is to try and see if there is oil leaking or a split in the rubber.
The noise has now gone showing that it was the bush that was worn.
I also used an Gap Tool to put the car onto the bump stops to make it easier to manipulate the air strut out of and into position.
