This may be more for a new thread, but do I 'need' strap on mirrors? Going to fetch the van today, hopefully post a pic later.

yes, even the width of the D3 mirrors don't meet the legal requirements, espec on a 2.2m wide caravan
Milenco Aero2 work well @ approx. £45
make sure they are attached to the top of the mirror housing. if you attach them to the bottom, they will damage the top of the door panel when the mirrors are folded or knocked back by an on coming vehicleDuncan

Just looked at your location Are there many caravan sites on the Shetlands Or are you faced with expensive ferry crossings whenever you want to go away
Always fancied a trip up there myself

Hi all again, apologies for the late response, just back from holiday.
Discodunc, thanks for the comprehensive info on mirrors, I had no idea about them being a legal requirement, and in true forum fashion, and much appreciated, the added and wise advice on fitting, not sure if I would have thought that far myself.
Gareth, there are a dozen or so official sites that I can think of off the top of my head, but I can also think of loads of places where it would not be a problem.
Since the google car was there it has been tidied up and has a new amenity block. There are eight serviced sites available on a first come first served basis, the amenity block has two toilets, washing machine, tumble drier and an electric shower. Payment is by an honesty system, flat fare for caravans and motor homes £10/night.
If we wanted to take the caravan on the ferry south it would be quite expensive, especially given the length. If you do fancy a trip to Shetland then feel free to let me know and I might be able to give you some useful pointers to help you make the most of a visit.
If I get this right then below will be a few photo of the rig

A big twin axle is easier to manouver at slow speeds than a small trailer, as it doesnt move direction as quickly. If your D3 is a manual, ALWAS use low range when manouvering if you want a clutch left.
Our first 2 'van were Delta's, a 500/4 and then a 550/5. Both lovely 'vans.
We moved aw\y when Lunar decided that the twin axles would only be 4 berth max.
