Superior SatNav/Camera solution for SE version of RRSport |
|
Having chosen the SE version of the Sport I've always felt that the Mio/Garmin/TomTom SatNav 'stick on dash' products didn't really suit the style of the car. So I decided to invest in the latest Alpine 64 bit DvD controlled, touch screen remote controlled product. The benefit is that the touch screen fits very well into the centre dash alcove and does a very good job in impersonating the actual LR product. The unit is set as 'handbrake on' which means you can change navigation settings/destination on the move by touch screen or with a neat remote control.
From what I've read the Alpine is currently considered the best product of its kind on the market.
Here is a slideshow of the product in my car:-

The Alpine products used were:

The DvD control box is situated under the false floor at the rear of the boot, the SaNav video control box lies under the front passenger seat with easy access to video inputs (in front of the rear seat 'kick bar' and with the air circ vanes relocated above the unit), the GPS aerial is situated under the top of the boot aerofoil (which is plastic), the speed pulse is hard wired to the main control box of the car and the TMC aerial is situated on the rear quarterlight window and looks like a heater element.
When reverse is selected you get a blank screen, or rear view if a camera is fitted - I decided to have a Pioneer 'mirror image' hi lux/ low lux camera fitted in the aerofoil- very small and discreet and I must say I find it useful too.

PM me for costs. I had it fitted by a Car electrician I've used for years, I got a great price and he fitted at my property. He operates in the London/SE area. 2006 RRSport 2.7 SE, Tints, Supercharger Grill & Vents, Tow Pack, Roof Rack, Buckingham Blue, Alpacca.

Tell me if I'm being too nosey, but approx how much did the hardware cost ?
It looks the dogs to me ! I get the same feeling that the Alpine DVD based solutions are excellent.
PS: To make you feel even better, a Japanese guy I met 2 weeks ago that owns a Lambo Diab GT, YES IT HAS THE Alpine DVD based Sat Nav from the factory. So it must be pretty good.

The whole package (SatNav,Screen, Ext spkr, Speed pulse, camera) c.£1400 plus £250 to fit , cheaper than spending the 5k to buy the HSE when the only element of the HSE I liked was the screen..!! .. and I get a camera too, and Nav on the go. The SatNav and screen was a little under £1200. 2006 RRSport 2.7 SE, Tints, Supercharger Grill & Vents, Tow Pack, Roof Rack, Buckingham Blue, Alpacca.

But then we drive cars that cost a lot more than, well something cheaper that would work very well hmmm?
I'm also a great fan of the Alpine satnav (7yrs usage), the LR software looks to be Alpine-derived IMHO, it is so similar in the interface - and I even discovered a feature on mine after working the wife RRS navigation - they are THAT similar. Cheers

Can it use custom POIs or Safety Cams? I hear what you are saying about style but I have yet to find any factory fit or after market fitted system that has the range of functionality that can be found in the best of the portable solutions.
Kenwood have one that runs Garmin software, its the closest. Darren Griffin

Custom POI's? Not sure what you mean.
Safety/Revenue Cams - I use a road angel, the need to update it would be prohibitive for a DVD-based system, RA can be updated over the web plus I have a lifetime subscription so no cost there.
I find you can have too much functionality in one place, esp if it gets nicked.... Cheers

Kenwood have an SD slot for that purpose. Hopefully more factory fit and after market systems will add this in coming models. Darren Griffin
