suggestions please!?
so considering the enormous knowledge contained within the D3 members' group;
I have an EP9 Superwinch sleeping away on an older vehicle, is it worth the effort to get it on the front of the D3 in some way WDYAR? if so what's the easiest and preferred method; hidden/2nd hand Warn LR mount? is it even worth it as it's 'only' a 9k lb winch?
What are you planning on winching??? David

well David, it has been suggested more than once on here that 9-9.5 isn't really enough for recovery of the D3?and theeeeennn......???
I have not seen the posts, but personal experiecne would have to dispute that. Durring a winching course I ran my D3 up a sandy hill until it could go no more becuase it was bogged down. The incline was farily steep and my wheels were sunk in the sand. With my 9K superwinch I was able to pull myself up the remaining 30+ feet of the hill with no problem.David

I am about to put a winch on mine. Can't get the Warn mount on its own so have 'ordered' a hidden mount from RLD
Not sure what winch yet, maybe a 12000lb if the price is right.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

winching out of sand is competely different to mud, the amount of pull required is far greater in mud, regardless of gradient. Also bear in mind that the rating of the winch is only for the first layer of rope on the drum, by the time you have four layers on the drum (and in most cases nearly completed the recovery) the recovery capacity of the winch is significantly less, can't remember the exact numbers but 3000 lbs comes to mind...
Other factors affecting the available capacity include heat dissipation from the winch (poor with plasma rope) and changes in gradient.
I have seen at least three Warn winches struggle recovering a Disco3 to the point where they were overheating, permanently damaged (the winch, not the D3) or near stall speed - at no time were the winches being abused or under the control of inexperienced persons....
A 12,000lb winch would be a sensible capacity IMO - together with a second battery

I hear what you are saying 10 but... I have this £note free Ep9 that I feel duty bound to put to some use and I'm trying to work out if it's less work to install it on the D3 than it is to get the Hybrid back on the road and use it on that, there are only so many hours in the day and spare beer vouchers aren't there... and theeeeennn......???

I guess any winch is better than no winch as long as you know the limits. For most situations the EP9 will probably be OK, especially if you use a double line with a pulley block etc.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

EP9 will fit the cradle but requires the solenoid box to be relocated - especially with a hidden mount

NO winch is better than an overloaded one ! remember the thread a while ago about fitting a (I think) 1500lb winch 'just in case'?
Clearly the EP9 is not in the category of going catastrophically wrong in the same way but how many people know / would be able to tell when a winch or it's cable is overloaded? and what would they do if the only options were carry on or abandon the vehicle?
