How sturdy is the rear Bumper?
SWMBO just called to say she's just had what they call a "fender-bender" across the pond
Basically, a Corina ran into the back of the D3, producing this damage:

Other than the scratches and both reflectors being broken, there's no other visible damage and the rear PDC sensors seem to work fine I am told (the Corina apparently will need a new front bumper, lights and bonnet)
The guy was very apologetic ("sorry, my foot slipped off the clutch" ), but just wondering what else I should check before taking it to the dealer and let the insurance take over? The whole thing looking from the side seems to be in it's place, will be checking the towing electrics, anything else?
I would imagine the plastic part of the bumper will need replacing (just in time as I wanted a colour coded one ) as this kind of deep scratch cannot be repaired?==> Guide - Inexpensive AV Modification

Seems to be quite a difference between the vertical and horizontal impact forces that it can withstand. Will be designed to absorb horizontal forces as part of the crumple zone to protect passengers.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I'll have a closer look tonight, just wondered if anyone had experience of how much flex or give there is in horizontal impacts like this one ad what to look at that usually gets involved in such cases...
My experience with other cars is that though externally things can look pretty subtle, behind the skin brackets can break, metal can bend etc.

I got rammed by a VW Golf in the snow.
The only apparent damage was like yours - scratches, broken reflector etc.
When it got repaired I asked the garage to spend time checking out everything underneath - in the end the insurance company fitted a new bumper skin, new reflectors and new PDC as the bezels had apparently took a knock as well.
The main steel bumper underneath was fine and there was no other damage.
The Golf looked like a Scud had hit it.
At the time (Christmas) non-colour coded bumpers were as rare as rocking horse poop.I see no ships........

I reversed into a concrete pillar in an underground car park (don't ask.... ). Anyway, the bang was very impressive, as was all my stuff flying off the dash etc!
I got out fearing the worst, only to find damage to the plastic "skin" and the rear PDC sensor. The impact had hit right where the cross member meets the chassis rail. I feel sorry for the pillar. That D3 is as tough as nails and was otherwise absolutely fine!!
The panelbeaters told me they had seen more than one car that had been written off by rear ending a D3, with little damage to the D3.
