I know it's a bit OTT for such an expensive automobile but, as someone on here suggested last winter, I carry a couple of wine bottle corks in the drivers door and when there's a hint of frost, I put them under the blades to keep them off the screen.

We just bought a Fiat 500, it has more advanced wipers, enough said!

The spindle is hardened steel and the wiper arm is aluminium so if the OP's experience is yours, you'll need a pair of the wiper arms (lower section) which are amazingly an easily obtained off the shelf spare at my dealers.

That's what I figured. Went past Lancaster in Reading at lunchtime while going somewhere else, stopped and an arm is £36+VAT and has to be ordered in from LR. Although nice parts guy did comment they sold a load last when we had the snow Rolling Eyes

If you have a pre MY-07 the part is different, and its £24+VAT.

If you call TLO I suspect the part is cheaper no matter what the year Laughing

Dr's diagnosis will be in once the wife gets back...

Corks work fine - and it looks strange when the auto function waggles the blades around in freespace Whistle

So if the sensor does both the wipers and headlights is there another point in the wiring that can be disconnected to isolate only the rain sensing part?

Arm was stripped. Manage to effect a repair by cleaning out the spoil and refitting using the standard industry torque setting of "FT", working at the moment.

Have to get new arm, but may look into decent after market one that is designed properly and can be left folded up.

Is it possible that LR designed the wiper arms this way in order to stop people opening the bonnet when the arms are "sticking out"? That causes a lot more anguish.

Put the details on here if you find one Thumbs Up

I tried to use my old ones by drilling a hole through the arm and the spindle with the ides of putting a pin or small bolt through it. That's when I discovered that it was hardened steel. Big Cry

Had same problem at a snowboard competition last year in Austria. Came back to the car after about 4 days and had to dig it out. Only problem was I dug the drivers side out first and turned ignition on to warm everything up. Didnt realise it but auto wipe was on but the arms couldnt move. Two days later when it was pouring down with rain the drivers side wiper remained at the bottom of the screen as it had worn to the core. Brilliant. New arms sorted it. I disconnected the auto lights/rain sensor after tht and it worked a treat, Doing the same again for this season.

Yeah but statistically, present company excluded, how many Discovery owners typically open the bonnet between going to the gym and doing the school run? Whistle

Aussie members seemed to have found generic replacement arms (use search) so wondering if I can do the same, will see.

Did contemplate some thread lock and see how it goes, but can't chance wifey getting stuck anywhere with daughter in the car and no wipers... not worth the £36+VAT.

I saw a lady last winter who must have been applying a similar technique. Despite the cold she was lightly dressed, and appeared to be carrying the corks under her jumper. 8)
