stuck overnight for 12 hours in car , run engine?or FBH |
|
Thankfully I didnt get stuck, but I hear that hundreds of others did in central Scotland.
I,m just thinking now about how I would keep the occupants of my car warm if it did happen. Apart from keeping warm clothes/sleeping blanket in the car, snow shovel etc to get out and excercise the muscles by digging out, you will be tempted to to run the engine to get a bit of heat going.
Alternatively would the famous FBH come into play here(if you had it modded anyway to switch it on manually), and would that be a viable alternative to get the temperature up a bit.............
that is, as long as you dont disable the car by draining the battery, or using up all your fuel so......
1. how long could you run the FBH to heat the car......evn just to take it above freezing
2.How long would your battery last?? if your fan was on low.....
or is this a big no no.............
At this point I would probably use the engine running occasionally to keep warm but Im just looking for better methods....?

Hello
The problem you will have when trying to heat the interior of the D3 using the FBH is getting the vent flaps to remain open with the ignition off. If you overcome this then the FBH ,when up to temperature uses very little power, so your battery would last for quite some time. Club Exped trailer

Except you will have to keep switching the ignition on to re-fill the FBH fuel pool as it's only got enough fuel in for about 40 minutes ISTR. Bodsys Brake Bible

I've had my oval timer set to one hour instead of the default 30 mins without issue. I've also fired it back to back when I've been held up getting back to the car so had to ring it again without problems Club Exped trailer

Don't forget though Lee ..the oval timer ceases as soon as the motor is open and 'active'....TBH I can't see how he would be pushing warm air into the cabin either 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

When I was sat on the A9 last week, stationary for 3.5 hours, I kept the engine running all the time. The range dropped from 450 miles to 430 in that time.
On that basis I reckon the engine will idle for very many hours before you ran out of fuel. Its important to keep plenty of fuel in the car if there is a chance of getting stranded. We also had water and lots of chocolate

Is there a risk of bring Carbon Monoxide into the car if the FBH is running?

I've not read up on the Danhag kits full spec yet but I'm lead to believe it may have a way of opening the vent flaps and running the fans without having to power up the CAN bus. You don't have such minor issue in a D4 though Club Exped trailer

Unless there is snow blocking the front left wheel arch, I would say no.

No ...the FBH exhaust exits behind the front bumper and the HEVAC system is setup to prevent the ingress of fumes. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I'd very much like to see that
I was of course referring to the older webasto oval setup and I bow to your greater existential experiences 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I work all over the country and use my comercial as a work station half the time - at the oposite end of the weather front - in the summer in the heat wave, I was working in London, I had to baby sit a job (which entailed waiting for something to happen before I had to do anything, which it didn't......) so I basically set up camp in the van with the engine running to have the aircon on, it ran for around 8 hours idling, for 3 days without a problem, this also included short journeys to and from the hotel all on one tank full......

When I did my apprenticeship I seem to remember the instructor at tech saying you can't get carbon monoxide poisoning from diesel fumes, he said you couldn't commit suicide in a car if you put a hose from the exaust throug the window. I should check this information I suppose but I have no intention of trying it out
Some years ago I was working out of a military airfield and there was a spate of snapped timing belts on some of the defenders. It turned out some of the ground crew were sitting in the defenders and running the engines all day to keep warm. So even though the vehicles were low milage the engines wernt. Not that running it for an odd day would make much difference I guess.
