Struggling to get rear disc back on..

Hi folks

I’ve replaced the shoes for the epb and the springs etc, the adjuster is fully closed (its free to move) everything seems correctly fitted again, but....

For the life of me a cant seem to get the new disc back on? It seems the shoes aren’t ‘closed’ enough to get the disc back on... I’m losing patience and can’t see what ive done wrong...

I’ve followed body’s bible... there must be something not quite right...

Any tips/help?

Thanks

The shoe expander is likely to be in the wrong place and will need correcting. Its easily maladjusted!

As above, check the Allen bolt adjuster is fully retracted. They have a habit of expanding when you fit the shoes as they get knocked.
The shoes may need sone persuasion to get back in alignment to be within the radius of the drum as it goes over them. It'll be tight anyway, as you've got new and full width friction material.
Keep at it!

OKay, this Allen bolt.... i had a wee play with it whilst the shoe was still off, and I could see how there was some adjustment to where it sat...and therefore allowing the plate between the shoes to be more snug..

So to get this better I’m assuming it has to be shoes off again? As when you slacken it, this allows the shoes to expand... and the tightening doesn’t help.

I’ll have a look/play with the old shoe Allen and see what i can do to make it better..

There is definitely gaps at the opposite side to the adjuster... where the shoes sit near the block piece attached to the dust shield. I thought they’d be flush to this, but i cant seem to get them flush. Perhaps this is because of the Allen bolt mechanism... i thought maybe it was the handbrake cable not sitting correctly but this looks to be fine....

I take it you mean the Allen adjuster, not the ratchet bit that you click round to set?

Have you got the actuator set to Mounting position?

There is a special setting to put the actuator into mounting position, it extends the cables right out to aid assembly. It’s in the bible I thought?

It’s on page 23 of the bible.
Before removing the rear Brake disks, please carry out this sequence to put the Electronic Park
Brake into Service Mode. Ensure brake pads and calliper is fitted to all wheels.
In the car with ignition in Position II, press the brake pedal three times and hold the pedal down. Push down on the EPB switch for 3-5 seconds.
Go to the main fuse box in the engine bay and remove FL8 fuse 30A (pink Fuse) this will ensure that the EPB is not accidentally re-engaged.

Because you have the callipers off, best to put a piece of wood or a couple of old pads in to stop the piston coming out when you push the pedal to activate it.

Ah okay, yeh service mode... i did do this, and ive got the handbrake cable back on. I wonder did it work correctly? And perhaps this is affecting things now? Is there a way to tell if the service mode is engaged by visually looking?

It would probably crush wood. Would ( pun ) that matter? Possibly not as long as pistons don't travel too far.
Old pads are ideal or flat bits of metal.

So go through the process again, but just make sure there is something in the calipers to stop the pistons coming out? So it won’t matter that the discS aren’t on?

Right went through the service mode again, and had another go at getting discs on, and I’ve got them on, but are very tight. One side i can turn with the help of a bar, and the drivers side i can’t even move with a bar.. going to call it a night and have another go at it tomorrow. I suppose i could get it all back together and give it a drive..

Cheers for the pointers thus far. Thumbs Up

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago, I dont think my efforts with the brake pedal properly put it into Mounting mode.

Once I'd used the Gap IID tool it worked perfectly and the disc slid on easily.
