strong smell of fuel when the heating is on
evening all,
I have searched but couldn't find the answer and I can't believe I'm the first to have this issue.
When the heating is on there is a strong smell of fuel in the car.
this isn't because it's really cold and FBH has kicked in as it could be nearer 10 degrees and the issue remains.
as an aside - there is a smell of fuel when the FBH is running, which I believe isn't uncommon.
this leads me to think that the FBH may be running all of the time?????
Where do I start? and what can I do to figure this out?
many thanks in advance

Take the engine sound cover off the top of the engine and look for signs a leak, replace the oil cap and start the engine and look again, be aware that there may be a very fine spray that has enough pressure to penetrate the skin.
Is there any change in the exhaust note or a whooshing sound?- that may be the exhaust crossover pipe leaking exhaust fumes into the cabin. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

thanks for your reply.
no obvious sound changes from the exhaust. will investigate the other things you suggest.
Thanks again

took the sound pad off - nothing too untoward to report.
but - FBH heater hose was detached and melted - so going to start by replacing that lot.
Will post in the right place
thanks again for the advice formerly Disco3Ben

Stopped in traffic today - big fumes from the bonnet.
Had a look and appears to be oil mist from somewhere, presumably landing on hot things which is causing the oil/fuel smell in the cabin
You can see it on top of the battery cover.
Any usual culprits I should be looking for?
Thanks formerly Disco3Ben

There was a post by Robbie a while back where he had experienced the fuel feed pipe to the FBH coming loose and touching the FBH exhaust causing it to melt, do a search, he did consider it very dangerous
Have you checked the schrader bleed valve on the top rear of the engine is not leaking?
I had a similar fault to yours on a Merc. where an injector had blown a seal, it was easily visible though when the engine cover was removed, the diesel had turned into a hard carbon type of material and the whole top side of the engine was caked in it, took forever to get it off, must have been leaking for weeks.

according to my garage it was a fuel leak - coming from one of the injectors.
LR recon unit on order along with the pipes that attach it and the other injectors (apparently all one unit)
so... no wonder I could smell fuel when the heating was on.
thank god I stopped when I did as the grey smoke was quite bad so the leak must have been getting worse and putting more fuel over the hots bitsformerly Disco3Ben
