Strange starting problem 2005 Discovery 3 v6 petrol s |
|
Good day,
I would be very grateful if any of you would be able to help with a intermittent problem I am having with my beloved Discovery.
A few days ago I noticed the average fuel flow on the instrument cluster had the 3 lines you get when you reset it. I only do this between fill ups and hadn't for a while. All the other info was still there.
When I started the car it started well but died out soon after, almost like a car needing a choke. The average fuel numbers re appeared and on the second attempt it started and ran normally.
This has started happening more regularly but doesn't seem to follow any pattern. When I start with the average fuel showing the 3 lines I can catch the engine on the throttle before it stalls and she runs well from there. If the Average fuel is displayed then it starts perfectly.
I can't get the faults read at the moment but I vaguely remember there being a failure to communicate with instrument cluster and possibly one to do with the crank sensor, I may be wrong.
So far I have tried a hard reset. Cleaned the MAF and the throttle body and fully charged the battery (relatively new) plus the usual wires and plugs checks.
I noticed today that when I accelerate hard the fuel flow will sometimes pop up the 3 lines but with no loss of performance.
Any assistance would be much appreciated since I am worried this may deteriorate to a point where I can't start the car and with the current lock down I can't get to my trusty mechanic.

AFAIK the petrol fuel filter is inside the tank and isn’t meant to be serviceable... that’s at least how it’s on the V8.
Sometimes weird cases get fixed by changing the PCV valve but yours doesn’t sound like thst kind of weird case. It does sound electrical, though...
As you note, codes would be useful.
Edit: try asking on the South African or Australian LR forums? The V6 petrol is pretty rare on this forum.

Thank you for the quick response and advice. One thing I forgot to mention was a barometric pressure fault. Not sure if that helps. I will definitely ask on the other forums though.

The largest market for petrol D3/D4s would probably be the USA. Thus https://www.landroverworld.org/ might be a good place to seek advice in this case. Disco4 V6 SC HSE (MY2014)

It's not that we don't want you here, we just don't want to admit we're guessing .

Thank you all. the other reading are as normal. This leads me to think it may be linked to the fuel flow measurement. I will definitely try asking around. I suspect this is going to be one of those had it before and it was linked to the glove box light being the wrong size type of things.

When I checked the car this morning, The dreaded 3 lines where there despite the display being normal when I left her last night so didn't bother trying a start. Just went out to it to test your question and the display was back to normal. Nothing was done to the car and the outside air temp is the same as when I checked earlier. I will check if changing the display helps when it next acts up.

Morning, looks like the problem happens irrespective of the setting on the dash. If the average fuel flow isn't displayed then the car stalls on first start unless I hit the throttle.
