Strange noise when pulling away |
|
Hello,
New to D3 and loving every moment of it. apart from....
A couple of times recently when pulling away there has been a noticable (in fact, quite loud) shrieking or metallic squealing sound coming from the car after beiing at rest for a few minutes (e.g. after filling up, stopping to open a gate). It goes away once up to spead and has happened 4 times in the last few days that I noticed.
It didn't happen when I reversed away from standstill - it had just beforehand.
Anyone have any ideas as to what this is?
Many thanks

Hello Rodan and welcome to the site.
It has not happened to me but I suspect it may be your Electronic Park Brake (EPB)
Have a look through this thread
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic14861.html
and see if your syptoms match any of those described.
Someone else far more kowledgeable than I will be along soon to support or contradict my theory. Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

Sure sounds like the problems people have with the EPB.
My cranky theory is that folk don't use the EPB enough, especially the automatic release (on auto gearbox machines), Mine used to squeak a bit (NOT the banshee howl of a real EPB problem - I've heard others at off-road do's and it's like Baskerville SFX) when I got it at 15 months old. Doesn't squeak now. Some users just use the Park function and no handbrake - a risky thing to do unless you're a flat-earther It needs exercise!!!
A lot has been written (see the thread) about not cleaning mud away after off-roading - have you been mud-plugging yet?
Don't forget to vote on that thread, and definitely inform dealer...
oh, and WELCOME 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

That's an interesting point Andrew.
As the cars with manual gearboxes apply the EPB automatically when you remove the key (unless you disable the function) it would suggest that manuals should suffer less EPB problems than autos. Maybe someone should start a poll so we could see if this is the case. Too much intellectual firepower can damage your common sense.

My auto also applies the EPB automatically when the key is removed.
I just had my EPB done on warranty - surprisingly the dealer was initially suggesting that it just needed a clean (chargeable of course) but on further inspection the shoes were showing some small cracks so the whole thing got rebuilt for nowt. All perfect now.

If its the EPB it would happen when the car was stopped and the EPB applied not when pulling away. It may be the front diff. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Earlier D3 do later ones don't. I'm not sure when the change over was. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Hi Roden,
SNAP!
Mine is doing exactly the same......! (2006 TDV6 Auto)
I ALWAYS apply the EPB when I park.... and it started (a few weeks ago) sligtly squeaking and fading out when speeding up after being parked with EPB applied and then driving off...... but the last 4-5 days it is UNREAL! For instance.... i've just been into town and parked up..... applied EPB and went to get sausage & egg bap (I know that's not important, but it was tasty!) back into D3 about 1/2 hour later, drove off with EPB releasing itself when driving off.... WHAT A NOISE!!!! Made people turn to look at where THAT noise was coming from...... real class!!!! It did fade away when I accelerated to about 30mph.... but it is certainly getting worse!
Already called dealer to have 5 other 'faults' checked... so going in next week..... will report on outcome after!
I am SOOOO annoyed..... Est-ce que bonjour, vous aime ma nouvelle découverte brillante gentille trois, je pense qu'elle regarde les boules de chiens, pas vous ?

EPB fault.......... Brakes locked on! |
|
Well........... the plot thickens!
Tried driving off in my D3 again and the EPB would NOT release at all!!!! Totally Stuck...
I tried placing gear lever in D then R then D again... repeated this a few times and eventully it released itself.... then as I drove off the SCREEEEEEEEEECH was horrendous, and it definately felt that the rear brakes were holding!!!!
LAND ROVER ASSISTANCE ARE ON THERE WAY OUT..... we'll see what happens?
Stay tuned for the next enthrawing episode of...... Me and my D3!!!!! Est-ce que bonjour, vous aime ma nouvelle découverte brillante gentille trois, je pense qu'elle regarde les boules de chiens, pas vous ?

my 06 manual does not automatically apply the EPB when the engine is off, i have not disabled it.....or is this something that the dealer has to enable / disable? If so, i might get this enabled as i nearly rolled into the house the other week

A wheezing noise will be your breathing.
Clicking noises may be wrist or elbow joints.
Creaking noise may indicate someone else is in the house, cease pulling straight away, or else What if the "Hokey Cokey" really is what it's all about?
