Stop-Start Stopped and will not start

My stop-start function is not working. A note on the dashboard says it is unavailable. I would understand this if the battery was low or the filter was clogged from regular driving in heavy traffic but it came on during a 450 mile trip back from Scotland so I’d presume the battery is charged and DPF filter clear after such a long run.

Any thoughts as to what the issue might be? Many thanks.

Might very well be time for new batteries. Had to change the starter battery of my MY14 last week. Max charge 64% and dropping to 40% when the car was unused for a few days. Since then start/stop is working again Crying or Very sad .

Check the voltage of both batteries as well as the charging voltage just in case.
As a replacement, you can use the following batteries from Exide (OEM):
Starter: EK950
Start/Stop: EK151

If you have an early MY14, then you might also have the old power distribution box that caused quite a few headaches. You can check your VIN against the following site: http://new.lrcat.com/#!/12728/53806/54256/4294/54351 . There were also a few software updates for the newer module to get the whole stuff working smoothly.

Edit:

My stop/strait failed around last December, had a new battery fitted a couple of months ago and it started working again, then after a couple of weeks it stopped working, even after a five hour run a couple of weeks ago it still didn’t work, plugged the Ctek in last weekend, it’s been working all week since. My advice, check the battery if ok, then charge it and see what happens then, at least then you’ve ruled out the battery.

In my D4 the stop/start just stopped about two years ago. No warnings, no messages - just, well, nothing. Has not bothered me at all.

Mines never worked since buying it, no warning lights or not available signs on the dash though. Some opinions of it have been it can be annoying as there's a delay in the engine starting so I'm not sure if I want to have it or not ?

Had exactly the same situation a month ago. Stop/start not available error light following a 4 hour round trip. Like you thought it couldn't be battery after a run like that.

On advice from this forum checked small battery using multi meter. With car not running voltage was about 11.5v. Tried charging using CTEK but came up with error after a few hours. Tried this twice to no avail.

Replaced the small battery - EK151 (cost about £45 with VAT). Easy swap and working fine since with no warning light. My battery was only 3yrs 5months old, so not great. Link to the post discussing diagnosing the issue and replacement below.

Many thanks for the very helpful replies. Indeed the stop/start may possibly be good for the environment but it can be a pain in the whatsit. The one in my A3, for example, will kick in even if it senses you are thinking about stopping. That may be good but sometimes you’ve just slowed to go round a sharp corner in say a car park. When the stop/start is activated it locks the steering wheel.

But clearly the stop/start not working could be a sign of the battery not working properly which I will now check.

Thanks again.

I know there’s a lot of negativity about stop/start on this forum, however I’ve never found it to be an issue. It’s only ever kicked in when the car has been stationary for a few seconds after braking and the restart works seamlessly.
Mine stopped about 18m after new. Dealer did software update to ensure it kicked in at lower threshold of battery power. Perhaps that’s why my battery failed so quickly???

Mines not worked for months Smile , fully charged main battery last month , checked both on multi meter this morning , main battery was 12.14v and small battery was 12.78v both at rest .
When driving the plug in volt meter shows 14.2/4

Do those readings seem ok ?

Main battery is about 25% charged! 12.78 is fully charged.

Main battery sounds quite low. Not sure if recoverable from that low voltage. If you’ve a CTEK you could put it on charge and see if it can charge it. It checks the battery whilst trying to charge and will come up with an error light if it can’t ( might take a few hours before you get to that stage). My CTEK MXS7 does this . Very useful and reassured me my small stop start battery was irrecoverable.
Cheers

Thanks for replies , charged the main battery 4 weeks ago on CTEK MXS 5.0 and no errors showed , took most of the day to end the charging sequence .
Is it worth charging again or try dealer to change battery (under warranty ) ?

my battery never shows above 12.6, then drops down to 12.4 over a few days use, thought it was knackered but it's been at this level since I had the car 18 mnths ago.

I dont have start stop on the 11my though.
