Stopped for fuel now car won't start.

Hi all.

So a couple of days ago I started the D4 (no issues) and shortly after setting off, I get 'restricted performance'. Stopped and started again and all worked fine again. Weird.

So today I nipped to the petrol station for a top up of diesel (it's a diesel, so no issues there Laughing ) and on getting back in the motor, it won't start?

All lights come on, I press the brake and press the start stop and nothing. Battery is new last month, connection on terminals all tight. Lights don't fade/go off and no low battery warning so I doubt it's the battery. It doesn't even try to turn over. Start stop switch works as I can turn ignition on and off and vehicle locks and unlocks etc.

A search on here suggests brake pedal switch, but I don't get the warning to 'press pedal to start engine' so I guess that's ok.

Another search says bad earth strap? Watched a few YouTube vids and it's a pig to replace.

So... The motor is currently sat at Tesco's express and I'm awaiting the RAC who text every 30 mins saying 'we'll text you in 30 mins'. That's been 3 hours so far. I've walked home which is only 15 mins away.

Is there any way I can use a jump lead to create a better earth to get her started and get home (3 mins drive)? Then I'll know if the earth strap is at fault and can order the part and cancel the RAC as they're obviously busy.

Would battery negative to body or engine work?

Thanks and if anyone needs anything from Tesco, give me a shout. Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter

Yeah James a battery jump lead will do it if the earth straps are at fault. Pull off the engine cover and connect it to the lifting lug in front of engine and then to the batt neg. Don't forget to replace the oil cap.

Brill. Just the advice I needed mate. Took me longer to find my jump leads than it did to start the motor.

Got her going and back home. Still waiting for the RAC to call so I can cancel them.

Love this forum. Cool

Thanks

Earth leads are becoming a frequently discussed issue on here.

Looks like it's easier to install an alternative strap than fix the originals.

Check/replace all the straps, sometimes they can look fine but close inspection will reveal if a strap is failing.Thumbs Up

Is it 32mm2 cable I need to use to replace the broken section until I get chance to buy a genuine LR one and replace the lot?

Cheers for the help. Time to crack open the gin!

Don't bother cancelling RAC,not unknown for them to turn up many many hours later.
At least you'll know when they call you to ask where you are Laughing

It might be a tad light but as it's a temporary job it will be fine. Thumbs Up
