they're no good for off roading - reduce clearance and no good in ruts
you get your trousers dirty by catching on themSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Side Steps = useless offroad
Side Tubes = they do the job but get trashed easily (I know, i had some) and cost over £350 a set
Best to buy some of RLD's Aluminium sills = much better, offer more protection and cheaper !!Duncan

Why reduce ground clearance? I say stay away from them...
Horrible things! Lower the suspension to make getting in and out easier Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

I agree that they are totally useless when you are going off road but for swmbo and the kids it makes life so much easier getting in and out of my car. No scuffing this and that.POT NOODLE NAVIGATION CHALLENGE 2010 WINNER

Which is precisely why I wouldn't ever get them......anything that makes it more difficult for the mother-in-law to get in the D3 is alright by me 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

After seeing what happened to the one's on Sturge's car at Salisbury, I don't think I would ever have any. They folded up and you couldn't get the doors open and it wasn't even a difficult track.

There's always those electric retractable ones...wasn't there a post about those a while back? Not sure if they were even on a D3 or whether it was an Off-topic post.

Spot on. Brute force and ignorance, the D3 does the rest.

I had to get some steps. I didn't want to because I was worried about compromising the off road usage, but after a couple of months without one, I was starting to get a bad back climbing in and out, even in access mode. Also I have elderly parents that I have to transport often, so it was a must for us. We had the rubberised factory fitted ones on the D2 ES before, so I guess we were just used to them. Plus, I guess if you keep using access height on every stop, I'm guessing the extra wear on the air susp with considerably reduce life expectancy.
I went for the genuine ones though in the end, as I decided they looked the best. I don't see the point in the tubes, they don't do anything! You can't use them as steps, and they get in the way when off road! (IMO)D3 TDV6 HSE 2008 Buckingham Blue (current)

Where is the option for "it came with them, but SWMBO won't let me remove them?"
