Steering Wheel Wobble when braking
Hello
Looking for possible causes for a steering wheel wobble when braking.
Does not happen all the time which is why LR cannot find a fault. They say no distortion in disks. Suspension arms ‘should’ have been replaced recently though no idea how to check if they were.
Tend to find the wobble occurs when hard braking from 70mph eg on to a slip road but not until the car is well warmed up eg 20 miles or so on dual-carriageway or when descending a steep hill and braking. The wobble is almost immediate as we found coming down from a ski resort recently.
Any ideas? I was wondering if there had been some front end damage at some point?

can you quantify the relationship to the warm up theory?
have you tried the same conditions when cold?
the only time i had such wobble was when lower arms outer ball joint had a small bit of play in them.
if the "warm" scenario you mention is true... i would possibly be thinking something to do with the power steering rack

It will be the discs. Not necessarily warped, but could have surface damage due to pad burn-in. Might have been caused by a sticky calliper, overheating the disc, then you sit at some traffic lights with your foot on the brake and it marks the disc.
I had the same. Replaced discs and pads, cleaned and checked both callipers, and it’s been fine for a while now.
It has been a constant issue on my D4, ever since new.
I suspect the caliper slide pins that have the rubber ends on, don’t let the pad release properly. Plenty of silicon grease and a good working out made them slide much easier.

Thanks. It happens when cold but only when we were descending a hill. Perhaps when warm and braking from 70 mph as we did yesterday on to a slip road replicates the same forces as braking while descending a mountain road at half the speed. I did wonder about the steering hence the concern that there might have been some damage at some point.

mine is exactley the same, i have already replaced the origanal discs and pads due to the shake on braking but it returned within a very short space of time on new discs. Tintenter

Had wheel alignment and wheel balance done but still there is a wobble. Can't replicate on demand. Seems to be road surface related but can't replicate on the same stretch of road. Very annoying and alarming tbh.

For clarity:- It's the heat that anneals the metal of the disc in one area (where the pad kept it hot at traffic lights), which then reacts differently to the braking heat to the rest of the disc, which is why it only appears as judder when hot.2011 MY D4 HSE

Steering Wheel Wobble-Warped Discs
I had my front discs replaced a few months back with non genuine discs. The first thing I noticed was a squeaking sound on turn and a slight wobble at high speeds when breaking. I didn't expect it was the discs on account of the fact that they were changed relatively recently. However, I saw YouTube video outlining the causes of a wobbled steering wheel on breaking.
I outlined to the supplier that the discs were warped, and for a nominal fee, he agreed to replace them for the original Land Rover discs.
The squeaking immediately disappeared upon the installation of the genuine discs and also, most conveniently, my miles per gallon increased by 10 mpg.
That's the equivalent of me saving 15 squid fill up and when you factor in this, those nongenuine discs would actually work out significantly more expensive in the running of the vehicle than with the genuine discs!

Similar issue but was the suspension arms that caused the problem.

I have the same problem on mine, discs replaced which sorted it and then after a few thousand miles problem returned. Tried the old hard stop routine to try to clean up the discs but no joy. One theory is that overtight wheel nuts might cause the problem? Interestingly my usual guy who does my winter to summer swap did it recently but hadn’t put the winters on last time and he said the garage must have banged them on with the air guns he could hardly get the wheel nuts off

Oddly, it went away for a while, nearly a year. Had a service recently, and it has now come back. Not saying the two are related. Wonder if it could be tyre pressure?

I had new disks and pads recently, brake wobble since. Its when braking from 70mph, I did a video to show it but not sure if I can upload.
Also had lower suspension arms replaced in December.
Took it back to the garage, they checked everything including suspension and could not find the cause. Re greased everything but still the same.
They have agreed to replace the discs and pads but would brand new ones really be that far out?

Recent wobble at speed and under harsh braking was cured with a new wheel bearing.
No noise or movement, but odd tyre wear gave the game away.
