My leather steering wheel is degrading on the top edge, probably from sunlight (a rarity here in Devon!) and gets sticky when hot, as mentioned in other threads. I've decided to change it with a newer one, but would like to know if it's possible to change it over myself. I'm happy with the airbag and switch removal - but do I need to use a puller to get the wheel off the column, or will it come away easily once the nut is removed? I did have a subscription to the tech info pages but it's expired now, so if anyone else can look for me that would be great . Also the correct airbag 'safing' produre would be useful - i know the battery has to be disconnected and the system left for a few minutes, but is there anything else that should be done before unplugging/reconnecting an airbag?Previously:

Apart from putting the electrics into sleep mode - disconnection of battery you will find that once you have removed the securing nut holding the steering wheel on the wheel comes off easily without the need for a puller. Had mine off several times - good thing is that LR have put a centre mark on the steering wheel aperture to ensure you put it on straight!!
Go for it its an easy job!!

Seems to be another LR weak point - the plastic one in my 4 year old Defender has virtually fallen to bits on the top edge, and now the D3's too. Looks like it's fairly easy to change though. If anyone can post the steering wheel removal page from the techinfo pages that would be muchly appreciated Previously:

No need to do it yourself!
Get it replaced under warranty ..... it's a known fault.
I had mine replaced and many others have had to.

Airbag saftey !!!
Remove the ignition key.
Disconnect the battery, earth lead first.
Wait 10 minutes for the SRS power circuit to discharge before commencing work.
NOTE:
The SRS uses energy reserve capacitors to keep the system active in the event of electrical supply failure under
crash conditions. It is necessary to allow the capacitors sufficient time to discharge (10 minutes) in order to avoid
the risk of accidental deployment.G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

If you are still under warranty go see the dealer. They are being replaced with full grain leather like the new ones.

Yeah, but it's still a recognised fault!
It's not as if it's a standard failed part.
LR know they have an issue with this.
Steering wheels should last much longer than 3 years.
How many other cars have you had to replace the wheel after 3 years?
Go to the dealer armed with the knowledge and experiences from this site and fight your corner.
Hey, they might only contribute 50% to it, but that's better than nothing!
You got nothing to lose.

OK, I've written a letter to the LR Customer Relationship Centre (WTF ), and decided to try to get the seat base sorted at the same time. I'm only a few months out of warranty, and they did change the dashboard (curling at the edges under the screen) on my old Disco 300Tdi after warranty a few years back, so there's hope! I'll keep you posted Previously:

Got an email back from LR today asking me to go to the local dealer and get them to take some photos of the steering wheel (the leather seems to be kind of 'melting' in places now so they can't really tell me it's supposed to be like that!), so i'll go across the border into Cornwall (passport ready ) tomorrow to see them. Hopefully i'll get the result i'm after, which includes the seat base and 'curling' airbag cover at the same time. We'll see Previously:
