Steering rack
Hi, I've been advised that my steering rack needs replaced in the near future. Symptoms are vibration coming through steering while braking. All new brakes and bushes.
Has anyone else here had this done as I've not heard of this as a common issue?

It wont be the rack, you want new tie bars and possibly track rod ends, (just got mine done, had the same symptoms as you) JE Remap, De-cat, Blanked EGR's, Allisport intercooler, Samco intercooler hoses, D4 rear lights, A bar, Big spot lights, Front headlight guards, 20'' Stormer wheels,

Common issue with the steering rack is a broken seal and oil spill. If thats the case its starts to get noisy when you steer. Vibrations and judders could be track rods.......
But you have new discs as well? Originals or cheap aftermarket ones? Bad discs will give you a wobble when braking CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

New discs and pads front and back within last 4k miles. New front lower wishbones and old bushes were shot.
Vibration is only under braking with no vibration through pedal and just through steering.
The garage is a good one so I have to trust their judgement however I was trying to establish if any other owners out there have had to replace the rack ever?
Hi there,
replaced my rack with 54-ish K miles (07 MY D3), as there was some play, unnoticed to me. HAd also replaced tie rods (not track rods as were fine), and finally all front end ball joints and bushes to cure a erratic handling sympltom.
Apparently LR had gone thoriugh 4 different part numbers for the steering rack so it seems there was a little design failure.
LR was out of stock at the time of failure so was rebuilt by a rack specialist, no problems since
Best regards

I have only ever replaced 1 rack on a Disco 3, and that was due to a porous casing...
EDIT: And it wouldnt be the first time I have had a pair of dodgy discsMy D3 Build Thread

Hi Mikey,
This garage also say they have only replaced one in their history. Just my luck!!!!
There is apparantly play in one side of it?
I was really hoping dodgy discs as you say but if it had been brakes would I not be feeling the vibration through the pedal also. This is vibration only through the steering???

Sure its not just the inner ball joint on the track rod? Part is only £70 from memory, and much cheaper/easier to fit than a new rack. Can you jack it up and check yourself?
The brake judder may be down to the above track rod inner ball joint, depending how bad the play is...
I have seen front discs give a judder through the steering, but not the brake pedal too. Would check the steering system out first though, just to confirm/eliminate any possibilities My D3 Build Thread

Iain (TFC) advised that I had worn steering tie-rod ends and should replace them, which I duly did...it really improved the front end response and steering accuracy....wasn't expensive so may be worth a look too ?"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Hi ,new to disco 3 so glad of advice .
disco 3 2008 model has a poor feel to the steering , not long bought it and has L R warranty ,it has been to dealer who didnt find fault but its handling is not good and not a patch on the disco 2 I traded in .
there is a knocking noise when you shake the steering wheel with the engine stopped .
I will phone L R assistance but any ideas what it will be ?
thanks

Thought it best to complete my story here.
After having the rack diagnosed as the fault of my vibration I decided to get a 2nd opinion from another garage so ventured up to Strathearn Eng after hearing all the good reports.
Discomikey seemed to quickly dismiss the rack diagnosis and seemed convinced it was front discs (which were new about 3000 miles before).
So they swapped new discs on front and as if by magic the vibration was gone.
Absolutely brilliant.
Some take aways for me are that brake issues don't necassarily have to be felt through the pedal and in my case only showed itself through the steering. And it's always worth getting a 2nd opinion on a fault when it's not completely clear cut.
I would be kicking myself and be a good bit worse off if I had gone along with the rack theory.....
Highly recommend the service recieved from the guys at Strathearn Eng.
