Steering column problem revisited

I posted before about the nervous response in the steering when driving over small uneven roads.
Decided to change the tyres, and in the beginning I thought it was better, it is not..

So it was not the tyres.

Is it me?
in other words:
Is it normal for this car because of the size of the tyre that a 4x4 always is more prone to some nervous response in the steering/ and that it always wants to go to the left or right when driving over uneven roads?

I notice also that when the car is parked, I can move the steering wheel a bit to the left and right before the tyres start moving, is that acceptable, or perhaps the reason of the problems?

Much appreciated for any responses, this steering problem is really making me think about trading it in for some other SUV, for the rest the car is doing fine, but bad steering is a killer. Mad

You may have too much play in the steering rack.

I've been having the same symptoms and also shod my D3 with new wheels and tyres.

Dealer looked at it and has ordered a new rack (on back order).

I also get clunking at low speed over rough ground. May be linked to the rack (although I cannot feel it, just hear it) or maybe suspension bushes / anti roll bar bushes. Will see post rack replacement.

There is a TSB about the rack.
