Should stealer do 4 wheel alignment ?

Having some work done next week to disco steering arms and bushes replaced. My local mechanic spoke to dealer when ordering parts and they told him I will need to have alignment carried out after work and only they can do it. Is this true. I had new tyres fitted six months ago by large tyre fitting Co near Basingstoke and they carried out alignment for me, they had all the gear and seemed to know what they were doing and charged less than half what stealer has quoted. Advice needed please

Ok didn't get any advice on forum so rang around to get advice from various sources. Land Rover dealers say you should get it done by them because they know what they are doing, when I mentioned this to a large independent wheel and tyre specialist they laughed and told me that their local L/R dealer uses their services for wheel alignment. So my advice to anyone is go to a well set up independent wheel and tyre company, thats unless you want to be robbed by your dealer

That's a bit of a generalisation 'get robbed'.

To be fair a good wheel alignment specialist will be able to carry out the work, however you may find that your local franchised dealer can get it carried out for less.

Lazer four-wheel alignment is quite an investment. Although we have the biggest Jaguar/Land Rover aftersales facility in Europe, we still elect to sub-contract our alignment work.

Don't understand what point you're making. If my L/R dealer quote £250 for alignment and independent company do it for less than £100 and the dealer tells you only they can do it and then asks independent co to carry out work. To me that's wrong and dishonest.

Just needs to be put in geometry set ( tight tolerence) mode first, this can be done by dealer or with autologic or faultmate. If the mechanic has autologic he should be able to do that. Then it can be aligned as normal.
Not putting it in geometry set mode and doing the alignment can work but will not be as accurate, After major work i would suggest getting it done properly.

My dealer "robbed" me Evil or Very Mad . Charged me £200 and after couple of month new tyres on front started wearing same as before Big Cry . Took it to garage were they had the hunter equipment it was way out and they sorted it for £87 .They called me over to the machine to show me how much it was out. £250 is robbery. Just had mine done for £90 by Matford in Exeter. It's worth driving to Devon for a day out for that.

Thumbs Up Thanks Zac this was my point! It depends on what dealer you go to. In fairlness we can do it for £100 for a forum member if in conjunction with a service or other work.

I've had this done twice now, both after major suspension work, bushes etc, and at first, Kwik Fit said there was no such thing as 4 wheel alignment, which shows how well they know their business, then another large local tyre co said they had 4 wheel alignment equipment, so I took it to them, and they did their worst, but it turned out to be just a super tracker, which although it had a set of scales hung on the rear wheels, was really only a laser tracker.

My LR independent then pointed me towards a local body shop, who had the full works. Amazing full 4 wheel alignment gear, and they allowed me to watch the whole process, adjustments on all four corners, and my LR guy dropped it into tight tolerances before they started. They were brilliant. One of their guys was very well trained in every aspect of the software etc, I got a printout at the end, and all for £50.

It's well worth checking out the specialist bodyshops, as they have to have this equipment, to straighten up wrecked cars etc, but make sure it is proper 4 wheel computer alignment.
