Starting Problems
I had a clicking noise when trying to start the engine - luckily, I had read on here previously that a faulty earth connection could be the cause. I ran a heavy lead from the battery negative to the engine. This has cured the starting problem but now I see that when I turn off the engine and after a couple of minutes I get a message “please switch engine on - system will shut down in 3 mins”
I have checked the battery and alternator - all okay. IID shows no fault codes and there are no other symptoms or warning lights. It must be an underlying problem from the initial fault of not starting or else the the earth lead I have attached is causing a load on the battery, or both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Jim

No work done since an oil change service last autumn - I'm suspecting that it is something to do with the initial not starting problem and probably the same bad earth wherever it is. I was just wondering if this is a common failure before I start to locate the earthing points.Jim

Have you checked the positive lead as there was a problem rubbing on the diff casing, if its bad it will blow a fuse

Thanks Globetrotter448 - I'll have a look tomorrow. Are there any other common wiring weaknesses/failures like this especially earth points. I have the circuit wiring manual but unfortunately no list of where the connectors and earth points marked on it are located.Jim

check this, a little bit messy but you should be able to find connectors. Bigger picture in gallery

If you have had a bad earth from engine to body it’s quite likely the battery wants charging, that is what the message is trying to tell you, good earth battery to body other electrics should work, time to get the Ctek out It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

M3DPO - Thanks, the battery is good and plenty of charge and alternator is okay too, although I'm just thinking what you have said - my new earth is to the engine, which has sorted out the starting problem - maybe a new earth to the body as well is needed!! Jim
