Our car is a 2016 Landmark with 39,000 miles on the clock.
Up until recently, the stop/start has worked as it should (some might say, “commiserations”!). However, the only time that it’s worked recently is after a journey of about 150 miles, and then only for a day or two.
Although the car isn’t used on a regular basis, when left for a week or more, I use a Ctek charger to keep the battery topped up. It also is used for journeys of at least ten miles, so I don’t believe short journeys are responsible for the following. I’ve never had a problem starting, but a couple of weeks ago, after the car had been stood for several days (not on charge) it took quite a bit of “cranking” before it fired up, almost as if the glow plugs hadn’t been working. I put the battery on charge for approx 24 hours and after this the car started normally (very quickly).
I have monitored the charging when driving the car, and in the main, the voltage shown varies between 14.3 and 14.5, so the alternator appears to be doing its job.
I have had the battery tested, which gave the following results:-
Battery Test - Good.
SOH: 79%
Voltage: 12.57v (this was after having the battery on charge and then driving to the garage)
SOC. 95%
Measured 760A
Select Input. EN
Set Rating. 850A
On Saturday, I started the car a couple of times and it was fine (having not been used since Thursday when I had the above battery test), but this morning, again it took more “cranking” before it fired up.
I have checked for any fault codes with by BT IID unit, and there were none that were related.
My first suspicions were with the battery, bearing in mind the stop/start failing (no warnings on the dash), but having been told that it’s good..........
What are your thoughts please?

Secondary batt is probably dead. Mine was showing 9v after 3.5 years and SS only ever worked after a very long drive. Replaced both, took it to a garage to reset the battery management system and it worked fine ever since.

12.57 is not a lot of volts, you should really have closer to 13 after charging and a run.
Mine normally sits around 12.8. My battery is 3 months old, the predecessor was sitting at 12.3. The BMS did not like that

If it was your small stop/start battery you would likely have a warning icon on your dash "Eco stop/start not available" .
It sounds like you main battery. My stop start was working in a similar way then eventually wouldn't work at all untill I had the battery replaced. If it's having problems cranking now, it will likely struggle further as the colder weather starts. Gary

Yes, my understanding is that if the secondary battery is on its way out, the ECO warning light flashes up. So far, there haven’t been any warnings. The cranking doesn’t seem to be much slower even when it does take longer, but I’m wondering if it’s saving the power for cranking rather than heating the glow plugs up to the proper temperature.
Thanks for the replies.

When I changed my main battery in June, I noticed an immediate change in the time the car took to start after pressing the button. It was almost instant with the new battery compared to roughly 2-3 seconds with the old.
My car went in for repairs and the battery was tested as part of that and I was told it should be replaced. I was on the verge of doing it anyway so bit the bullet. It was 5 years old at that point. Given the car wasn't used too often (once or twice a week) I regularly top up charge with my CTEK which probably kept it going, but eventually even that didn't keep Stop/Start working. Ironically, after several months, Stopped /Start worked on my way to get the battery changed. It must have known ! Gary

Thanks again. Time to bite the bullet and worry the wallet moths.

I didn’t get an eco wanting light when the secondary battery died. I only got it after I replaced it but hadn’t told the car I had.

Well I bit the bullet this morning and got a new battery. After fitting it the car started as normal (firing up very quickly), so we’ll see.
However, what I missed doing when removing the old one was disconnecting the vent pipe, which of course came out with the battery - what appeared like five yards of it! I’ll have to work out now where it’s routed when installed properly. Doh!

Did you do a Battery Management Reset after replacing the battery ? This can be done with an IID .
Cheers Gary

If your start stop doesn’t work, try charging the 2nd battery. If it won’t take a charge, connect a another battery to boost the charge level and then charge it.
I did this to mine when I changed the main battery and so far all has been well.

There’s something weird going on. New battery fully charged. Auxiliary battery fully charged, and whilst the engine turns over fast enough it still took a couple of seconds to fire up.
I had to do a vehicle reset via the BT IID unit as each time I tried to do the “new battery fitted” update, it threw up the message “Operation Failed E 7”.
Also, the voltage displayed hasn’t improved with a new (and fully charged) battery.

I have no experience or personal learning on this but this thread (link below) indicates that it took a couple of days for things to 'settle' after battery replaced and BMS reset. Might be worth re-checking everything in a couple of days.
