I know this is going to sound silly and I'm sure you have checked it but.... are you sure the positive terminal connection is done up really tight

I have seen them rot through and cause issues like yours, i think i have read somewhere that the positive wire to the starter can rub and start to short.
Have you tried the above?- it is far easier and safer than bump starting and will eliminate the earth cable if it makes no difference It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

All sorted. Thanks for the pointers and tips everyone.
Starter motor was dead. Replacement fitted and all is well.
Not an ideal night for lying on your back on a gravel drive trying to work out how the hell you get to the various bolts and then actually get the starter of of the available hole.
