Just had my disco 3 in for it's first service. (15K on the clock) Got my front fogs fixed and a new set of wipers. Both are fine now. Complained of squeaking back brakes which has been happening on and off since i got the car.
They said it,s a build up of brake dust and is a common problem, but they want me to take it back and charge me £150 to fix it. Rear brakes need "stripped,cleaned,lubricated and electronically adjusted". Apparently this will happen every 18 months or so !
Anyone had this problem and had to pay this?

Squealing brakes are not reported as a common problem. It sounds like they are trying to do an EPB adjustment to me. That should be free TBH  Try another dealer  21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Both my 05 Disco, my mate's old 05 plater and his new 07 plate have had this recurring fault. Our dealer says it is a common fault. Always had it done for free under warranty at Stratstones!!

There's a difference between squealing brakes and a screaming EPB ...the latter is very common 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

My 57 plate D3 also suffers mild squeaking brakes now and again but haven't got round to havingt them looked at yet.
Must admit that I won't be interested in paying anything to have this fixed on a car 8months old with 7k on the clock. Sounds like we share the same dealer though so be interested to see how you get on with this. How much did they charge for a first service and did they give a loan car?
I saw somewhere that reversing slowly in low ratio with the brakes on can clear out the rear brakes - might be worth a try.

Service was £365. This includes the new blades which i had to pay for ! If your are using the Aberdeen dealer and want a courtesy car (which is a freelander) make sure you phone up 3 weeks before you want your jeep booked in!
Got fed up with Aberdeen dealership (where i bought the jeep) Didn't get the best of service with them. Now use Perth dealership. Miles better.
Will let you know how i get on with the brakes. Don't want to be paying this £150 now. It's better to burn out than to fade away.

The squealing brakes problem (not EPB) can be caused by a lip that is created on the edge of the discs due to wear. When I had mine last serviced by an independant not a dealer, he just ground off the lip and Bobs your Uncle.
Don't think a dealer would even think of doing this as in my opinion they do the sevicing by the book, where as my mechanic is not only a superb mechanic, but also an enthusiast as well.

Well I have now covered 140K+ in two D3's and have never had or heard of a 'squeaking' back brake. I have heard the EPB squeal on a number of occasions  . There is no way you should be charged for this fix. As DG says it sounds like your dealer is going to try for an EPB adjustment charge.
One Q. When do you hear the squeak. Is it when have stopped and you apply the EPB or when you are moving and apply the foot brake  In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Just spotted the problem  You have a 'Jeep' and have booked it into a LR dealer. Take it to a 'Jeep' dealer and you should get it sorted In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The mild squeak on my D3 is heard just after pulling off, i.e. just after the EPB has released - it is no more than a gentle rubbing noise which disappears after a few seconds. I only hear it if the window is down and the radio is off. My D3 is manual and the EPB has auto release. I'll check the rear discs for an edge though and remove this myself if necessary.
So far, touch wood, not had to use the Aberdeen dealer. They were pretty good when I bought the car, but I suppose they would be, eh?
My pal in Fort William swears by the Perth dealer and he runs a fleet of Defenders for business along with his own D3.

The squeak from the rear brakes reqs. the rear discs removed and some copper grease applied between the handbrake shoes and the backplate. It is quite a common fault on D3 and RRS, unfortunately, not covered by warranty as it is as was stated earlier, a build up of brake dust etc...

We had a squealing rear brake a few weeks ago. Fixed by dealer, we think, though they charged us a modest amount for the pad. TBH that's OK; our French isn't quite up to a warranty barney and the cost was small compared to generally very good service.
No EPB screamer yet but with more offroad driving coming, I think it's likely soon. Cue the sounds of the banjo ...
