Speed Awareness

Just renewed my insurance and cut the price by £40 a month Very Happy

However, I would have saved more until they asked me to declare if I had ever been on a 'driver awareness course'?

Now I was told on the recent course (speed awareness) that my participation was confidential and the fact I had done it would not be shared on any database, only the Police who issued the NIP would know. So did I really have to declare this? I took the view that if I didn't tell them and then had a claim and they found out I had withheld the info they could refuse to cover me so complied and they duly bumped up the price in return Big Cry

Thoughts? Should I have told them and more interestingly were they entitled to ask?

Read somewhere that if you're asked then you have to provide a truthful answer, if they don't ask you're not required to tell them.

Not all insurance company's ask, you could always switch to one that doesn't and if everyone did then those that ask would soon stop asking.

Yes you are probably right, they are sneaky though as it's the very last question after all the faffing around of getting the price. They were still cheaper than others even with the modest hike otherwise I would have told them to sod off but there is no obvious way of knowing if a company will ask this information without going right through the purchase process, certainly not via the comparison sites as it is not a standard question.

Still saved money so I should be happy, just wanted to save more (must be the Yorkshireman in me Laughing )

Admiral add it to your premium, it has been said that they also sponsor SAC, so they may have access to who goes on them. Both of us had been on them, cost me another £100, my premium didn't fall by £100 when they expired either a year later, in fact it actually went up. Censored

Exactly the same thing happened to me...with Admiral. Had to ring up as they had a detail wrong so wanted it changed. Got asked about speed courses and had been on one a couple of years ago so said I had. Premium went up about a hundred quid. Asked if I wanted to still renew, so said I'd reconsider, so then got the hold on a minute and they could do the original price. Evil or Very Mad

Yet another insurance scam. I came home to a "you naughty boy how dare you do 34 in a 30 when your just coming out of a lane which is open speed limit. Down hill. Looks like I'll be on one of those courses very soon. I hate the fact that they add £100 to your insurance. Surely the point of the course is to make you a better driver, ergo you premium should be less because your now a safer driver. Yes I know the theory beats the actual reality. It just smacks of yet another reason for the insurance companies to take more money off us. Big Cry

If you don't tell when asked, how would they know? If the police don't share the info how would they check?

never lie to an insurance company - you get found out and your insurance usually goes null and void - just at the point you really don't want it to happen - remember that automated spiel when you first make the call? it says very clearly about disclosure of information that may affect your premium/policy....

£100 versus £40K or £50K invested in a motor - you do the maths... Rolling Eyes

Yawn Rolling Eyes

The method of receiving the penalty is immaterial; a propensity to speed is statistically significant in establishing risk.

Out of interest, what line of work are you in? Can I make sweeping statements about people who do your sort of work too?

For the avoidance of doubt, I don't work for an insurer Thumbs Up

Let's face it the course is taken to avoid penalty points, the assumption being that it will mean less impact on your insurance. I am generally a very careful driver and do not speed (unless I have legal dispensation Wink ) and am even more conscious since I took the course so it does seem unfair to penalise.
