Spare wheel winch ka-put!

Evening all. Has anybody broken and repaired the sealed winch underneath that raises / lowers the spare?

Mine has locked / broken tonight and I have 1000 miles to do on Saturday. Can it be mended or do I need to order a new one pronto with rapid delivery?

All (most) input welcome.

They are known for going wrong, I am not aware of a fix.

Looks like a call to the Large one.

Recieved mine from The Large One last month as my old one also jammed. It cost about 40 quid and was really easy to replace, just a matter of unbolting the old one and bolting on the new one.

Just remember to keep the winch under pressure when winding it in, I think one of the causes of mine jamming was winding the winch in without the weight of the spare wheel when I had to take it off for repair.

I ran into a problem with mine about 6 months ago. There is obviously a problem with them - in my part of the world at least - because no dealer in the Middle East has one in stock (even after 6 months).

I know what caused the problem, which doesn't necessarily help with a repair but may stop somebody else from suffering with the issue in the first place. I've suffered a few puncture while desert driving, and have swapped out the spare whenever necessary. No problems there, as I always use the (woefully inadequate) LR lug wrench to lower and raise the spare wheel.

However, when I've taken the car to a tyre dealer for a repair/replacement, it never occured to me to stop the technicians there from using the air wrench to lower the spare wheel on the winch.......
Yes, you've got it now, using the air wrench damages the gear drive inside the sealed unit, to the extent that the drive eventually just 'slips' whenever the drive nut is turned at the top.

I did have an engineer friend take the sealed unit to pieces to identify the problem and attempt a repair - if possible. The weakness appears to be with the excessive wear on the transfer drive on the cable spool.

The repaired item does now work, but only in a limited fashion. It will lower the spare perfectly, but raising it is a little more tricky; the weight has to be supported a little and the gear slips again as soon as the wheel reached the top end of travel. (It doesn't shake loose at all, though.)

I've eventually managed to buy a new replacement in UK, which will shortly be fitted. I'll then have the original unit stripped down again to see if a permanent fix can be achieved.

THe lesson to be learnt? NEVER use an air wrench to lower/raise the spare wheel.

After only 500kms, I had a puncture and expeienced problems with the spare wheel winch cable which seized.

Took this back to the dealer who said the problem is when winding in the cable withour any weight on in, the cable tangles.

So I aksed what I should do when I needed to leave the spare at the tyre repair shop. His answer was to wait until it was fixed !!!

This is a ridiculous answer, as in this case, the tyre required a larger plug which needed to be ordered in.

The dealer has replaced this unit under warranty, but said they would only do this once.

The whole spare wheel mechanism is poorly designed in my opinion.

Has anyone got any advice of how you can retratct the cable without causing it to seize ?

Yes - had the same issue and the only answer was to replace the entire unit (under warranty, fortunately). As Chriss says, it may not be ideal, but just avoid using it if empty - not worth the hassle.

Or loop it through the recovery point if you don't have a zip tie handy.

Been there, done that, fortunately got the new winch under warranty...
