You will probably have to replace the winch unit anyway, so just do what the thieves do and cut the cable?

My tyre winch stuck halfway a few months back, tried turning 22mm nut back and forward a few times then put some more strain on the wheel and it seemed to release but only after about 30 mins. Thumbs Up

Well we got the wheel off and it's now in the boot.

I need to have a proper look at the winch or just get a new one.

There's always something eh?

Thanks for the replies.

There is a problem with the spare wheel hoist being wound up without a load see http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic17984.html for further details.

I do remember reading one post where someone said that they had taken it apart and fixed it.

Funny that this thread should pop up today. When TFC was round the other week he spotted that my spare was hung the wrong way round i.e. with the shiny bits of the alloy facing the ground so the outer of the wheel gets hit with every stone, stick and goodness knows what else flys about under there. I hadn't noticed it in six months of ownership Shocked but hey ho.

So anyway at the weekend dropped the spare down turned it over, reconnected the cable and started winding the winch. Then I found out why the previous owner had put it in the wrong way round. About three inches from the top the winch started clicking as I turned it and would't wind up any more. I could not in any way get it to raise the final three inches, with no amount of turning, lowering and raising.

So I had to turn the spare back round the wrong way and hoisted it up that way until it was fully home, of course you leave three inches more cable extended that way becuase the cable has to go further through the wheel when the wheel is the wrong way round.

I'm guessing that my winch had had it and the only option is a new one?

I must admit that in 5 years I have never touched my spare. I know my dealer gives it a squirt of air every year (on top of my routine checks) but does any part of a routine service call for the winch to be checked?

I'm worried that after years of being ignored it might be seized beyond use!

It should wind down ok. The problem occurs if you wind it up without a load on it, which is the natural thing to do if you have placed the wheel with the pumptured tyre in the boot so that you can take it to be repaired.
