have you tried resetting the iPhone - backup, wipe it to factory and reinstall everything via iTunes. I had issues which settled after that.

Managed to get an IPod Touch 2 gen for £20 off Ebay to just leave connected, hopefully back to normal now.

This may sound a bit daft and obvious, but I just discovered my ipod had the HOLD button across. This meant its front panel controls were disabled... but it still worked through the cable connection to the LR controls, though it periodically dropped connection.

Having discovered this oversight I have released HOLD and at the moment there have been no lost connections despite switching engine on and off and doing lots of other in car changes to equipment that previously appeared to trigger the lost connection.

I too have trouble playing music from my Iphone 5 through the USB connection in the glove box. Wrong format is what the car says. I was not aware that it's a common problem.
