Sorry for repeating - Engine noise |
|
I am a first time poster here so go easy.
I have a very noticeable Sewing machine sound under acceleration. Many people talk about the 2.7 being noisy after vacuum recall but this is becoming a nuisance
I bought a 2007 D3 HSE about a month ago with 57000 miles on it and a healthy service record. Now I've been diving into the old posts regarding engine noise and I'm not sure if I am being overly sensitive.
Here's my situation:
1. Early morning the car is sluggish and peps up after about 5 mins of driving
2. When stationary the car revs without a noticeable rattle
3. When driving irrespective of speed the sewing machine noise occurs
4. No black smoke less I really boot it and then only a small amount (normal for a diesel)
5. On the motorway it isn't really noticeable and the engine drives smoothly without loss of power
I have changed to premium diesel and added some Wynns gold and am currently 50 miles in with no noticeable change
I have had a full service belts and oil pump too
I have checked for secondary vibrations and can't find anything and have no codes other than EGR low something or other
I monitored the injectors and they are between 960 and 1080 across the 6
Any ideas of what to do next?

Hello and welcome,
If it isn't on here it probably hasn't been encountered.... BUT what you need is to find a good independent and start using them imho....
Maintenance and these cars are ongoing.
Good luck! Jim

Thanks for the quick reply. It was serviced last week by A1 in bury (LR specialist) but the noise was there from before so I’m a bit baffled to say the least. I’m hoping for some noticeable change after the injector clear has gone through the system but am wondering what else it might be.
Anyway I’ll look out for the next response for some additional candidates for the issue.

Are you sure its not a loose heat shield or something similar!!
Good luck

I’ve been under the car and all the shields back from the engine guard are solid as well as those on top. I’m going to take off the engine guard today to check around that area because I’m not sure if I completely checked everything I could have, being unfamiliar with engine.
Basically I’m in 2 minds, rattle from something loose or something with fuel delivery (either injectors or high/low pressure).
Because the noise is in sync with the car when under acceleration it could be something loose.
But
Because the car is sluggish in the mornings I’m wondering if it’s fuel delivery.
All in all I’m, I’m most concerned about it being the fuel delivery.

So got the this morning and reversed out of the drive. Testing the fuel delivery theory I tried flooring the accelerator immediately. Nothing, then after 2-3 seconds the engine responded and revs rose. Repeated 3 times and similar experience. After about 3mins throttle response was normal.
Secondly, before doing some long put off diy for the missus, I rooted around the engine bay and still can’t find anything loose. Oil level is correct and I was about to go back underneath the car when the snow started.
So fuel pressure seems to be an issue in the mornings. The previous owner was using the car in London for short journeys so I’m hoping that the fuel system is a be ratty although I have already driven it for around 600miles and filled up a couple of times on supermarket diesel before joining the forum, then did 1/2 a tank on BP ultimate with wynns gold diesel treatment which I am still driving on.
So could it be the fuel system is making it rattle?
I am tempted to try the 2 stroke option next to see what difference it makes, any thoughts?

Don't be too concerned about the slight lack of power when you first start up from cold. Alot if not all of them do it, mine resolves its self in about 30 seconds unless its really cold then it can take up to a minute or so I believe its something to do with the fan locking in until the viscous connection kicks in, that's what gives you the " early morning Land Rover roar" Hopefully someone will come along soon and explain it better than me ( or tell me i'm talking rubish).
Good luck

Thanks for the reassurance on that point. Still getting used to the peculiarities of the D3 drive no mannerisms.
I’m used to working in a 1990 v6 mk1 Shogun which took about 2 tools and you could see everything.
I’m starting to move towards a faulty injector . Although the values are correct from my scan tool readings, I think that maybe spray patten is out due to to short journeys being a London car (57000 miles since 2007 mainly in the city).
The wynns diesel clean doesn’t seem to be doing much so I might try millers product to see if I get a noticeable difference. If so then I will take a closer look at the injectors.
All in all, I’m a bit more calm about the situation now that I’ve done more research.

Have a look at your inlet…. There is a sensor in the inlet Y-piece… with the butterfly..
City use means a lot of EGR use… i bet, sensor is dirty, as is the whole inlet track and EGR valves…
Valves not closing through “exhaust dirt” etc… look there…. Best regards

When cleaning the sensor..Don’t poke in the sensor hole!
Ultrasonic cleaning is best, maybe break cleaner will do also, but bottom line… be careful with it..
Egr valve’s cleaning involves al lot more work i am afraid.. Best regards

So went for a drive with the LR3.0 scan tool on and Injectors 3 and 4 are both showing readings of 930 (injector 4) down to 840 (Injector 3), all other remain above 1000, methinks either the injectors are dirty or they are knackered.
Fuel pressure is steady at idle at 26psi so I will try to record in the morning the pressure and battery voltage at startup and see if I can eliminate the fuel pump and battery as the root cause issue too.

Well did my tests this morning and fuel pressure is strong so no concerns with the fuel pump thankfully.
The injectors are all over the place with 3 and 4 showing more and more like they are to blame.
Going to try and test spray pattern and clean them.

Well aren't I a silly billy. Turns out that whatever the noise was , its 'normal' for the disco 3 as the injectors and fuel rail are generally noisy. Took it back to A1 4x4 in Bury and they put my mind to rest. I guess its just me being overly sensitive.
I suppose that's the trouble when gong from Japanese to LR.
